So what happened to Autumn Bailey? I saw a question earlier in this thread and looking at the MSU/Ky box score see that she played in 4 sets while the team had 5. I have not seen anything else though. Did she injure a knee? An ankle? Any word on her status? I first saw her during the NCAA tourney last year in Madison and could not believe how good she was, hope this is not too severe

How many final fours and/or national championships did Penn State win prior to joining the Big Ten ? If you are suggesting the Big Ten made Penn State better, I hope you aren't talking about the level of competition. Even Russ has said that until only recently when he looked at other Big Ten teams he rarely saw anyone who could play for Penn State. I think you need to take that back. That is utterly false and not true. Russ is very careful about what he says, especially about fellow coaches and programs and most certainly their players. On your first point, had PSU not joined the B1G, I believe they would not have but a few NC's period. I really don't have time to explain the value of high level competition. H V, thank you for being a PSU fan....seriously thank you, but take a bit of pause before you hit "create post" ....just 30 seconds to read your thoughts and as I have learned its ok to admit you are wrong once in awhile.

He also won't say that because it would mean he's a great recruiter, not a great coach. What coach would say that?

You know it's volleyball season when every thread on VT gets hijacked by the PSU fans.

I hate when people get hurt. Particularly a kid who uprooted herself from friends, probably disrupted her degree progress a little, for a better volleyball situation. Great kid, hope it isn't season ending.

He also won't say that because it would mean he's a great recruiter, not a great coach. What coach would say that? I don't see how one is related to the other. The ability to recruit great talent does not exclude the ability to coach that talent. One can be both a good recruiter and a good coach.

It greatly diminishes your accomplishment if no other team has a player who could start for you.
But, by all means, keep insulting the rest of the B1G -- and undervaluing how good of a coach Russ is.

So Russ should recruit mediocre players and still win national championships to prove how great of a coach he is? I'm not undervaluing Russ Rose as a coach. I think he's a terrific recruiter and a terrific coach. One does not preclude the other.

As hard as it is to agree with you based on your posts, I do agree with you in this instance. They are not mutually exclusive, and Rose is most certainly both. I think they have obviously done a ton right in the last decade, getting great players has been their number one thing. They have just been able to do way more with that than what the other 1-2 teams who have also been able to do have.

Nice to see Happy and dot BOTH can't read.
No one said recruiting isn't part of being a great coach. What WAS said was that Rose said no players from other B1G teams could start for him. He would not say that for many reasons, but mainly for the reason I stated.
But thanks for all that extra info.

Hey firedup, speaking of sleeper, I went to the Maize and Blue game and I thought the freshman setter won the job. She was very good in that game, I think it is a matter of time before she will start over the 5th year senior. Your new freshmen OH and the DS are good too. That is all.

Glad to hear that you ventured to Cliff Keen to check out the Maize and Blue match. Old timers and newbies alike commented on how competitive the gym has been for the Wolverines this year in camp and particularly in that intrasquad match. Really tough to score points that even led the coaching staff to wonder out loud if the issue was the offense not being where they need it, or whether the defense is really strong this season. Most think after the first weekend that it seems as though the defense is really good, even though there are still areas of growth offensively.
As for the setter position, we'll see if the 6-2 that they are running continues to be as beneficial as it was over the opening weekend. It does seem to help them with their front row defense, as well as provide more options offensively. I am a fan of both Warner and Abbott and believe that they can both contribute this year. Defensively, Jenna Lerg is as good as advertised in the back row, joining a fantastic libero in Tiffany Morales and Jenna's older sister, Lindsey, a fourth year player who has anchored the backrow as DS since Michigan's magical run in 2012. Carly Skjodt is a fantastic Freshman with a very high volleyball iq and shot making ability to match.
In sum, I agree with your assessment. In addition, the fact that there are 17 talented players in the gym competing for playing time this season, as opposed to 12 healthy players last year, is reason alone to be optimistic about their chances to be more competitive in 2015. But don't get too fired up about them yet. We want others to keep sleeping on Michigan for oh, another 3 months or more.
