Yup, this is certainly "the" biggest match that counts. The one that decides who will win the championship. On the face of it, the US should be stronger but never underestimate Russia.
Now the worst case scenario, even if US loses, they will still have a chance to get second place (and get the ticket to Rio)? Or not? I guess that would depend on how Russia, China and Serbia performs.
In any event, my ideal scenario is US wins the championship of course. But who will get second? Most likely Russia or Serbia at this point, assuming they don't lose in any other remaining matches. Except for their first loss to China, Serbia has been playing well. I think they got a good chance. I would also be skeptical of China at this point. They are mentally weak, inexperienced and unstable. They tend to choke comes crunch time so I doubt they will go far. Of course it is quite possible I will be wrong. So we'll see.

The one qualification that can be predicted with confidence after tonight is that if Russia wins, Serbia will get in.
USA winning would still require them to get past a feisty Japan to feel comfortable. Russia losing would likely eliminate them, but they could get in with some help from Japan.
China's situation won't be resolved tonight.

Oh man, this brought back bad memories from the last WC! The US had one hand on the Cup already, all they needed to do was to beat Japan and the championship is theirs. But they lost to them and handed the championship to Italy! The US won't choke again this time right? I mean, on the face of it, the US is stronger than Japan in all areas, there is no reason for the US to lose to Japan...right? Unless the pressure gets to them again and they repeat the choking fiasco in the last WC.

bad memories? sure! my sister was asking me why am I shouting so loudly at the television. Up 24-22 in the first set and they collapsed Japan always played their best against USA at the big tournaments like the 2010 world championship bronze medal match and the 2011 WC. Based on the way they are playing at this tournament, USA has a lot to worry about

I will be sad if USA does not win this World cup but I will not be devastated like what happened at the last WC and the 2012 OG. This is because USA had already won a major title last year and they got the monkey off their backs. Just like in tennis, I want my favorite players to win one of the Grand slam title and it does not matter which one is it even though Wimbledon is the most prestigious. When they retire they will not be in the discussion of best players not to win a major.
Before the World Championship last year, USA is definitely the best team not to win a major. They have so many near misses like 1)82 world championship where they HAMMERED the eventual champ China in early round 2)84 OG (beat eventual Champ China in RR but lost at home in the final) 3)2002 World Champ (stupid accident happened to Phipps) 4)2011 WC (beat all the main rivals but choke against Germany and Japan) 5)2012 OG everyone know what happened
I do not include 2008 because they overachieved with a silver
Sheilla Castro said she knew Team USA could choke after the first set because they have never won a major title before. That was hard to read.
When Sunderland broke down interviewing Karch, I cried too. It was not easy to be a team USA fan but it is a lot easier now since they broke thru with their first major. Obviously I want them to win the world cup and the olympics games but now I will no longer lose sleep over it if they dont
