This has been a bad weekend for Minnesota sports, so far, with the Vikings still to play. Maybe the Lynx too. So it's nice that the team I care about the most is taking this one.
15-6.
I'm not sure what all the subs were in this one. Someone want to fill me in? Beal? Did Hannah go to the middle? Did Handley set for a while? When did Wilhite come in?

Sorry I had to take care of some things, didn't get to see the 5th set.

Epic collapse for Illinois. Illinois was up 21-11 in set 3, Minnesota then takes 51 of the next 71 points.

Wilhite started coming in for Goehner when Minnesota was serving for an improved block for a couple games. Eventually - G4 sometime? she started coming in full-time across the front row. 4th and 5th sets saw Hannah in the middle and Beal at opposite. Handley came in for a while in G3 or G4 in place of SSS.

Well, that was quite the surprisingly easy set after going down 1-2. What happened? I'm only following the scores, not watching. And, the Gophs rush out to a 6-2 lead in set 5. Was there a lineup change that caused all of this. Did Illinois completely fall off? Did MN get that much better? Willhite is in and H. Tapp in the Middle with Beal on the RS, Beal putting up a great block, 4 block assists in 4th-5th set

Wilhite and Handley both came in at the end of set 3 when we were down by a lot--I don't recall the exact score, but it was probably around an 8 pt. deficit. And we slowly started coming back--and that momentum really carried over into set 4. Wilhite wasn't really pounding the ball, but she made some smart, strategic shots--and didn't do too badly on defense, even though Illinois was targeting her on serve receive.

When did SSS go back in? How long was Hannah in the middle? SSS started sets 4&5. Hannah played middle in those sets, too.

When did SSS go back in? How long was Hannah in the middle? SSS came back in immediately at the start of set 3 but that is when Hugh moved Hannah to the middle and Maddie Beal to the right side. Good strategic move as between that and the increased service pressure MN was putting on IL you saw the result.

Good strategic move as between that and the increased service pressure MN was putting on IL you saw the result (and keeping Sarah in the front row)

IL wins set 3 25-22. Takes a 2-1 lead. After 3 sets, IL hitting .295 to MN's .298. Most of IL offense is coming from Birks (18K) and Strizack (15k) on the left. SSS has been a little off tonight and got pulled halfway through set 3. Handley coming in and doing ok, but the set was too far gone. SSS came back in at the beginning of set 4, along with the line up changes of Hannah into the middle and Beal on the right.

Well, that was quite the surprisingly easy set after going down 1-2. What happened? I'm only following the scores, not watching. It was a really weird match. To me (possibly influenced by the maroon sweatshirt I was wearing), it seemed like the match was controlled by the Gophers, who were really aggressive for the first couple sets, then completely disappeared in the third, then put the pedal to the metal like I haven't seen them do for a long time in the last two sets. There were issues with spreading the offense (Santana and HTapp had all or nearly all of the Gopher kills in the first set) for periods of the match but -- and, again, I may be prejudiced -- Illinois always felt very reactive, even when they were winning. And it was, indeed, a great crowd. More than 4,000 for sure. EDIT: 4,111. The stats reveal some of the oddness of the match but this sticks out: Gophers sided out at 89 percent in the fourth and 100 percent in the fifth. (With events elsewhere in the league this evening, maybe Santana is set up as POW?)
