I'm recent to the forum, have lurked and poked around here and there. I was at a match at a Large Division 1 private institution not too long ago. I had been to matches here several times over the years and have had no problems or issues. I had even got to know some of the other local club coaches who attended over the years. I was bit vocal on this day regarding some slight criticism of one of the OH's play. I did see a few parents glance over at me. Didn't think it was a big deal. Once the match had ended I was standing on the bleachers waiting to see if any people I know might be there. There was the typical post match activity on court with parents, athletes and students talking and doing photos etc. After waiting around, sending messages on my phone and people watching a bit, One group even asked me to take a photo of them with their student athlete. There was some staff there standing around and cleaning up. I walked out the arena towards my car when a group of campus police officers approach me. They start interrogating me asking me who I knew there etc. I told them I was there for the match and was leaving. They ask for my ID and do a check. They claimed a few parents had called in claiming there was a person making them feel uneasy by standing there. I was forced to wait for almost 15 minutes before I was handed a ticket for "Suspicious Loitering" and given a trespass ban from University property. They informed me that it was private property and that they can ask me to leave for any reason. I tried to prob and find out what this was all about and they informed me that I had to write to the University Police regarding the issue. They told me the parents had complained to the coaching staff as well. The following week I followed up with a letter to the coaching staff as well as the Athletic Facilities Director, and got the stock response of please correspond with the Police. I emailed the university police asking for an explanation of what the issue was and requested that they remove this trespassing as I have attended many events on the campus including several other sports and have a good record. I even told them to check the survellance footage. They write me a letter informing me that they are upholding the trespass ban. No other details were provided Now I am of middle eastern origin and felt that someone may have sized me up after the match and profiled me. I wrote back the Campus Police and the Head Coach along with the Director of Athletic Facilities. I was asking for details regarding the people that had made the accusation against me. Inquiring if perhaps some profiling had occurred. I even provided them my phone #. I mentioned that I had tickets to other athletic events that I would not be able to use. The next day I get an email from one of the School's lawyer's and he writes asking me to send receipts of my ticket purchases and they would provide a refund of my unusable tickets. He tells me to strictly contact him regarding matters. Now I've attended matches at dozens of schools and this was the only time something like this has happened. It seems strange that a group of parents can start accusing and influence the staff to do something like this. I plan on attending a match with some friends at another school were this school is playing as a road team. I don't want to let that group intimidate me or prevent me from enjoying the match. I plan to sit with the home team's fans. Is there something I can do to make sure they don't get away with just accusing me without any proof? I was planning on using my camera phone if necessary to record any situations. This type of thing would never happen at sports like football, basketball, women's basketball. I sometimes wonder if its the nature of over protective parents involved with the sport these days. I don't fault the coaching staff because they would rather please vocal parents than some random spectator. But this is Division 1 scholarship athletics, there are gonna be fans you like and don't like at a match. I've only read your first entry and about 4 following pages afterwards--I can't imagine wasting my time to read any more of it. Plain and simple...you had too much to say about a player or player-which you could just a easily kept to your self but had to blurt it out loud. You want to talk about making future videos?? I'd rather hear an actual tape of you yapping at a player/players and hear what "exactly" you said and how you said it. Then, the old "race/ethnic" card. What next? Because you're left or right handed they were picking on you?/ My advice.. do everyone a favor and don't go to any more of this team's games and the parents/fans and players will all think you are the greatest, in spite of your race/religion/color, etc. Only lawyers will be angry that they didn't get a bundle of cash from you by dragging out the whining of a crybaby and tying up the courts from more meaningful trials such as spitting on a sidewalk or not having your dog tied up at the park.

I understand, and that's why I clarified/elaborated. But the come along lately posters trying to say I was trying to pass off the "nine out of ten" comment as "fact" clearly did not follow the thread. In my comment prior to this one, I stated that it was my opinion that nine out of ten..... Since when are "facts" used here, LOL? In my opinion, 99% of things posted here are peoples "opinions". It's my opinion that you are close to reaching @dumas level. And that's 99% bad. Do not bring me into your silly name calling. You act like a skinny, short kid from NJ that cannot even play the sport he comments on. Grow up.

Can't believe this thread is still alive but since it is, I'll add my two cents.
I'm a parent of a player. I've watched a lot of volleyball. I've said things about a player's performance that I wish I could take back and I've heard things said about my kid that I wish had not been said. If you play a sport, people are going to be critical. That's part of the experience and you learn to expect it. As a parent, if I hear something said about my kid's performance, either good or bad, chances are I'm already thinking it myself. I'm not going to turn around and look at you unless you really, REALLY cross the line.
I was at a bridal shower once where we all went around the room giving marital advice to the bride-to-be. When it was her turn to speak, the great grandma, who I thought was either sleeping or dead, perked up and gave this advice, "Learn to bite your tongue."
That is good advice. Think about it next time you go to volleyball. Or leave the house.

The best thing I've read in 17 pages.

I just hope that if the reason for all of this was because 'touchline' was being critical of a player, that the same treatment is given to a spectator when they say things about officials or players on the other team.

The Final Conclusion!
So after some back and forth emailing where I tried to press for the report. I even recorded a phone call with them in which they keep saying its not a crime, not a crime over and over so they can't give me a report or any more info.
I later get an email from the School Law Office informing me they decided to refund my money for the tickets to football and basketball for this year. See proof below. But still I can't go back there.
I decided to take this offer and scrap the matter. The Help from people who posted and Pm'ed on this thread helped a lot.
Some FAQ and Comments
What did you exactly say during the match? I don't keep a transcript of every word I say at a match but it was something like "That player is inexperienced" and "That player is making too many unforced errors" From feedback I got It ended up not being noticed really.
You are playing the victim race card they don't ban innocent fans! I'm not sure if it was racially motivated, but as you can see with the evidence there was no crime committed, they refuse to give me any evidence, and the law office processed a refund for tickets that are normally ALL SALES FINAL.
Why don't you go to the ACLU or the Media? I filled out the ACLU issue submission and sent information to the University Paper. In addition I posted on reddit and other Duke forums regarding the issue.
Did you get a ticket? I was given a paper that said trespass warning suspicious loitering
Something is off about this guy etc..
Well I was the only 6 foot 2 dark middle eastern looking guy with a beard standing in the bleachers after the event that day. Not saying it was the reason, but def made me stand out.
Would someone who was guilty of something really go this far to escalate to the school executive level?
Will have the audio up on youtube soon.

Did you fill out the General Complaint Form or the Racial Profiling Complaint Form? www.acluofnorthcarolina.org/Ask-for-Help/get-legal-help.htmlMight be a hard sell, after Paris, however. In your case, some parents freaked out; now, everybody will. Won't be surprised if some start calling for suspension of habeas corpus, maybe even marshal law.

My daughter is going to try to go to the Duke game this Sunday and goes to school nearby. Hopefully she won't get a trespass notice if she makes any mild comments in the crowd. Since she's a petite white girl she should be safe from that. Disappointing that it went down this way for the OP.
Since the university has just dug in on this and is giving no information or recourse to the OP it's likely that the presumption that requires the fewest assumptions is likely to be correct. In this case and in my opinion, that is that the OP was racially profiled. If that wasn't the case, then I'd assume the school would tell him why he received the trespass notice.

I didn't see any reason to assume racism originally. But since the university is giving a fan basically the most severe punishment possible with absolutely no explanation then they doesn't deserve any benefit of the doubt. There was a reason for this and they are going out of their way not to explain it. They've opened themselves to people assuming the worst.

I kept a copy. Not sure how much a volleyball event case will be important to them, but it can be added to a much larger case. "What does it say on the back about appealing the trespass ban? " Earlier in thread I posted email I sent with appeal explaining what I saw happen. It was the beginning of the emailing and escalation of the issue, till I finally got contacted and refunded for all athletic tickets.
