Again, one match doesn't prove anything one way or the other. Top teams are shown by their body of work, not how they look in any one particular match. UW clearly has some issues at outside. In all their conference matches their outsides have started out tentative, and only worked themselves into effective play mid-way through the match. Well that I will agree on, and it's something I predicted long before UW even picked up a ball this season, but what I struggle with is making some sort of sweeping statement based on 1 conference match, which is what that other poster was apparently doing. I just think it's stupid reasoning.

Like I've said before, Sylbeldon is my fave middle in the land. Impressive.

Way too many stretches of error-prone play by UW. Arizona defense is spectacular.
Snuka was spectacular....but Sybeldon was SPECTACULAR.
Haven't seen the stats...but UA had a ****load of service errors. Especially in the first set. UA seemed to do a very good job of handling Strickland serves.
Washington is going to have to play much better and be more consistent if they're going to contend for the Pac title.

UW had 13 blocks. UA 6.
Both teams had 4 aces, but UA had 11 service errors to Washington's 6.
Other than Sylbedon, no one on Washington hit above .241. Of course Sylbeldon's 731 made up for it.

Quick middles >>> slow middles. The tall trees cannot move quickly both for closing blocks and getting off the net in transition.

One could argue that was Jim McLaughlin's proven record.... Although it was Leslie who actually was a star middle, so probably she has had some impact there. There are some big holes to fill for next year, and it will be a interesting test of Cook's recruiting to see how well they do at it. But first they need to win this year. A run for the conference championship and a run in the tournament would do a lot to help convince recruits that Washington is still a desired destination.

Lianna Sylbeldon was great, yes. But I wonder if Coach Rubio had, as the announcers suggested about a dozen times during the match, put a double or triple block on her the whole match the outcome would have been different. There was a single block on her all night. This drove the color commentator crazy. 19 kills, no errors and absolutely no adjustments!

Attendance 1,350.
Crowd didn't seem to be much of a factor.

The UW Twitter feed points out that the 1st set dragged down Sybeldon's numbers.
Over the final three sets, she had 16 kills, no errors, on 17 swings. That's .941!!!

Attendance 1,350. Crowd didn't seem to be much of a factor. I must admit that I am used to attending Hawaii matches at the Stan Sheriff Center with very loud crowds. I was surprised in watching several Pac 12 matches on TV and the crowds were relatively quiet for all of them. I remember the Washington crowd being very loud for the postseason matches against Hawaii in past seasons. Perhaps the TV broadcasts lack crowd noise microphones; if so a fan who actually attended the match can provide first hand observations.

UW clearly has some issues at outside. In all their conference matches their outsides have started out tentative, and only worked themselves into effective play mid-way through the match. Julye did spring back later, after having that deer in the headlights look starting for the first time. Showed she can adjust and has a whip-fast arm. They've still got that one problem rotation - started out with Tanner rotating to left-front, then they went back to DeHoog there. I thought Scambray had a good night. Jones was hitting better, staying behind and getting on top of the ball, snapping some balls to the floor, rather than getting under the ball and sailing hits out of bounds. Great all-world night for Sybeldon, but you have to wonder about Rubio's decision to single block her all night.
