The UW Daily also has a post-match report, written by Shane Lantz with several quotes from players and coach Cook: Read the full UW Daily story HERE.

What happened in the first set? Is Washington that good or did ASU just fall apart?. As you might expect for such a lopsided score, it was a combination of both. UW came out serving tough and ASU was mostly out of system throughout the set. The UW block was effective and may have got into ASU hitters heads. There were a big number of ASU hitting errors that would have been kills if they were 6 inches or less in the right direction. In contrast, UW offense was consistent and varied. ASU actually seemed to focus a bit on the UW middles, keeping them more to locating tips and chips (which they did very successfully), but that may have cost them in effectively blocking the outsides. ASU made adjustments in the second set and just settled down for a much more competitive match, until Gardner went down.

I suspect there is a point in a set like that first one, where the players on the losing side just resign themselves to not having any chance of getting back in the set and begin to think about set 2. The coach may even feel the same way.

Julye was quoted in the UW Daily:
“Being loud is what we have been working on a lot,” Julye said. “ … That’s been really big for me, because sometimes I’m a little quiet, and so they’ll get on me. When I’m loud, it’s effective and it makes a difference.”
It sounds like Julye is being asked to do more by the coaching staff and her teammates, and she is shouldering the responsibility. I've never heard the adjective "loud" applied to a volleyball approach, but it makes sense if you think of a player being quiet and disappearing.

Sometimes, being loud means exactly that, communicating audibly with your teammates; which, not incidentally, requires making decisions early and definitively, and committing to the play. Whatever she means by it, I like the effect.

With a score of 6-3, K. Pickrell (S) and Ricedorff (OPP) subbed in for Arellano and BreElle Bailey. Arellano and Bailey didn't get back in until the score was 24-6. Keeping two of ASU's best senior players on the bench for almost the whole set was a big factor in being able to run up that score. ASU switched to a 5-1 in Set 3, partly due to Gardner's injury, but also possibly due to K. Pickrell having only 6 assists in the first two sets.

feel very very sad for Gardner and ASU. They are on a verge to a historic and record breaking season.
School like ASU do not normally get top 20 players unless they are in state. They gotten one in Gardner four years ago. she played above her ranking, ended as an all time great and now something so cruel happened

Nooooooo!! I was really hoping this wasn't the case. I hate seeing athletes college careers ended by injury.
