25-21-22
Notes:
Dutro did not play at all. (I don't know why.)
Gauchos had 14 service errors, the worst this year.
Nelson is back.
Blackshire hit .667 for the match 10-0-15. That leaves her hitting .613 for the weekend, 19-0-31!
Gauchos out blocked CSUN 13-3! (Kathy definitely invested in blocking this year.)
Nice job by the Gauchos. (Does Kristin Nelson make a difference? It looks like that is a big YES.)

Kristin is back biggest negative was missed serves -- do not have stats yet --- from my count 4 in 1st game 5 or 6 in 2nd game, and 5 in 3rd game. Thibk the total could be more.

Any word as to why Dutro didn't play at all?

Just my thought but she seem slow (yesterday) like too many steps to get to the ball quick feet small steps. Seem a little awkward.

Not sure why Dutro didn't play... seemed like Kathy was much more conservative with her substitutions today then she has been in past games... Against Pacific she had been basically always keeping only either Mari or Ashley in the game and subbing a middle and a setter whenever one was rotating out of the backrow... is that traditionally how 6-2 is done? Tonight only Mari played but Ashley looked fine on the sidelines so not sure if it was just a different strategy trying to go for more consistency at setter to help the hitters or anything more than that. Don't know the stats, but Janine looked better tonight and yes she's taken over for Erica as the setters default "Gee I know I'm not gonna set this well, better send it in Janine's Direction cause I know she'll get it over." Serving is now a major problem (was against Pacific too)... four of the first 7 Gaucho servers (rotations?) ended in service error... my count was 5 total in the first game just found the box 7 aces 14 errors Also looked like Olivia had an off night, but didn't realize it was that bad 11 kills and 8 errors

Cal Poly took a game off Pacific when UCSB, Long Beach and Irvine couldn't?
Pacific wins 30-18, 24-30, 30-19, 30-18

It was an interesting night. I'm sure CSUN is a little upset with the officiating. There were some, er, creative calls, but I don't think it made the difference in the match. Baylee Hasset and Emily Hendrickson started in the back row with Nelson (our Libero) serving. Mari started in the front row with Olivia and Janine, and we ran a 5-1 the entire match. One thing I've noticed about Ashley Dutro is she is completely ineffective on the block. I don't think she can be used unless she is always in the back row, and it's nice to have that left hand of Mari's in the front row every now and then. At game point in the first game, UCSBVball and I noted that it had been a while since we got to stand up and stretch for a game point.

strange huh. Again, Pacific is an unusual team. Cal Poly took a game off Pacific when UCSB, Long Beach and Irvine couldn't? Pacific wins 30-18, 24-30, 30-19, 30-18

Having watched both CSUN and Pacific I honestly think CSUN played better. Got to admit it is a wild year.

From this morning's Daily Nexus regarding Mari and the 5-1: "I figured to go with a senior that's been there and run a 5-1 because last night was a little unsettling," Gregory said on Saturday. www.ucsbdailynexus.com/sports/2004/7890.html

Having watched both CSUN and Pacific I honestly think CSUN played better. Got to admit it is a wild year. While I had to work that night and missing another chance to go to the Thunderdome my workout partners went to the match three nights ago and they were disappointed that Cal State Northridge didn't really put up a fight against UC Santa Barbara. They've already seen CSUN play twice( and a couple of times last year) and weren't sold on them yet if they have taken up their game play up a notch to be competitive and better than UCSB and what they saw was a CSUN team that just seem flat and bit frustrated while UCSB as always as in the past just being consistent and plugging away. I told them that's how the Gauchos are year after year - they may not have someone like a Teee Williams or a Kim Willoughby on their team but as a team that plays as one unit they're hard to beat. They stopped watching CSUN players and started concentrating on the UCSB team because...well they were just better to watch since they were playing good. My friend said that CSUN just didn't seem to be in the match and that's disappointing because I was hoping for a better result after being dominated and swept by UCSB in three games last year. Oh well, they cleared one hurdle and then fell into another hurdle. The way I look at it, is that CSUN season is like running a 400m hurdle race - they keep tripping over a hurdle and the other Big West teams will run past them. Hopefully they have picked themselves up and gotten over this match. Better luck next time Matadors. www.gomatadors.com/wvolleyball_details.php?news_id=01498www.newspress.com/sports/100304wmvolley.htm?now=62837&tref=1

Why? Better ball control? Better hitting or just crisper play? Having watched both CSUN and Pacific I honestly think CSUN played better. Got to admit it is a wild year.
