Nice article, although it did focus on "dad" more than the title my suggest. I am confident and will stand by my opinion that Scott Robbs is the best volleyball play-by-play announcer in the sport. His daughter is also one of the cutest things in the stadium too! She's also a big volleyball fan and maybe a future National Anthem singer. I'll remit that even though I was annoyed at the time with KKEA cutting into the volleyball with football broadcasts that I understand, but man... that was annoying!! Scott did a nice job on filling us in where he was cut off.

I met Scott Robbs several times.
A long time ago, I used to listen to Kanoa Leahey cover the Wahine on radio. He was awesome. Then, one day, they made the switch to Scott Robbs.
I sat next to Robbs one night for a Wahine match, not knowing who he was and I commented to Robbs, "Boy, the best Wahine play-by-play guy is Kanoa Leahey! The guy who took his place isn't at Leahey's level."
Then, I found out I was talking to Robbs. Talk about foot in mouth. Over time, I grew to like Robbs so much that I kind of forgot what Kanoa was like on the air. Robbs is great! If you're reading this, Scott, I'm sorry for my sorry-arse comment!
You go, Scott!

At first, I didn't really know(I kept listening to broadcasts late). Then I noticed Robbs' style. It's high energy and really gets it into you what is going on. I thought Kanoa needed some more time to develop. He was getting better and I was really getting used to him when he made the switch. I wish Robbs wouldn't mention the score a little more but other than that, he does a good job staying away from the inaneness that plagues most volleyball broadcasts. I met Scott Robbs several times. I do enjoy Scott Robbs very much, but I'm comparing him to other volleyball commentators ... so obviously not too much competition. Overall, though, I don't find myself complaining with his play-by-play like I do alot of other commentators in all sports.
Another volleyball play-by-play guy I like is Florida's radio guy. He totally gets into it and is quick on his feet in describing the action (Sorry his name doesn't pop to mind).

Tom Collette. He does a much better job when he is doing play-by-play of two-non-Florida teams.
I think his enthusiasm for the Gators hurts his broadcasting, personally.

It's interesting how Robbs tries to be the Red Barber of the Pacific with his signature "Crush the coconut" line and other Island comments to make his broadcasts more distinct. I think he would sound better to mainlanders if he dropped the accentuation but hey, it's the Hawaii fans who keep the radio station in business so we can crush as many local foods as we want in our broadcasts.

Yeah, it is Tom. I was thinking as a Gator fan how I would get into his play-by-play. But he does have a great delivery. My pizza guy has much better delivery than Collette. Seriously, his style and appreciation of his team even against podunk opponents takes too much energy to listen to and is too hard to listen to when he gets excited. However, in my opinion, he's better solo. Listening to that Missy girl makes my ears cringe and wish they were stuffed with pepperonis.

For those of you who caught the replays of Cal at Stanford, what did you think of the play-by-play announcer? His name is Roxy Bernstein, and his partner on color Friday was Sinjin Smith.
Roxy is a Cal grad. He's done solo play-by-play for Cal men's basketball (for at least six years), is the current sideline reporter for Cal football, and has done fill-in play-by-play radio for the San Francisco Giants.

I love the fact that Scott Robbs constantly mentions the score (within that game and overall games). Many times on other broadcasts (even on TV), I have no idea who's playing who and who's winning.
I watched the taped Washington vs. UCLA the other night and for a long stretch, they didn't even show the score, nor give any clue as to who was winning in games. And this was TV!!
