I am a high school girls coach and looking into purchasing the USA Volleyball Critical Thinking on Setter Development manual to share with my setters. Does anyone know about this manual and how it rates in terms of the information being beneficial. I just need to know if I am wasting my time with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have it... somewhere. It's ok. I don't think it's a waste of money, but then again, I got it for free. ;D You might want to look into Rick Butler's videotape series on setter development... he's the "king" of high school setters, of course.

Former Nebraska Coach Terry Pettit has a setter training video as well, he used it on his daughter who was NOT a very good athlete and made quite a setter out of her in high school.

Moderator Note: I have deleted two posts (one only because it quoted the other). I am not about censoring opinions or trying to cover up history. I just don't want this to turn into a war, as indicated below. If someone would like to start a thread on this, then I will consider letting it live for a while, but it will be strictly monitored.
I don't have the best opinion of Rick Butler, based on the article in Sports Illustrated for Women, but I"ve also never met the guy or seen him coach in person. I do know this, however, Rick Butler and SPRI threads are like a virus for any volleyball message board. Whatever you think or whatever points you want to make, no matter how important, will ikely get wiped out in flame war that lasts longer than a Florida Hurricane season.
In the end, no one's mind will have been changed, no new memorable facts will come out, and everyone's going to be mad at someone else to the point where the moderator closes the thread and cancels a bunch of accounts.
You might as well start posting here about whether or not the holocaust was a hoax.
Certain topics just don't lend themselves to productive discussion on internet message boards.
The only possible exceptions to this rule: 1) Rick Butler himself posts 2) one of the accusers or new accusers post 3) someone can point to documents, letters, etc. that weren't drafted by either Jerry Killian or passed on to Robert Novak. 4) someone from USVA who dealt with the matter directly posts.
If you are not one of these people, I kindly ask that this thread go back to the whole "Setter development question" :} as if this SPRI part of the thread never happened.

I am treading lightly here, so, please, put the long knives away. I saw the Butler training tape for setters awhile ago. I have also seen quite a few of the setter trained by his methods. As far as teaching the mechanics of setting, I believe it is very good. It is definitely worth looking at for ideas.

Training and Developing the Setter Part I was produced in 1988 or 1989, I believe, and had Butler and Julie Bremner in the tape.
