Northern Iowa def. Iowa, 3-1 (30-21, 23-30, 30-27, 30-26)
I believe this was a home match for Northern Iowa.

Good win for UNI. Who is the bigger rival to Iowa? UNI or Iowa State.

With the success of UNI in recent years and Iowa States problems with their volleyball program in the late 90s I guess you'd "intuitively" say UNI.
Though neither Iowa or Iowa state have been overly competitive in recent years I doubt you could call either of them a rival to UNI over that time frame.
Perhaps if Cindy can bring Iowa back to some level of competitive play over the next few years it will become a good in state rivalry.

Good win for UNI. Who is the bigger rival to Iowa? UNI or Iowa State. Certainly is was a "you better win" for UNI. Even in their current down condition, UNI is still better than Iowa. Also, to be at home, they need to win these types of matches. As for rivalry, in volleyball UNI is probably the bigger rivalry. In everything else, it is still ISU (although I should note that in men's basketball, when they come to the Dome the Hawks can't be all that pleased right now; UNI never beats ISU, but has beaten Iowa in CF a few times, including two in a row)

A forgotten step-child lives to show up the parents favorite. Last year, the crowd for the Iowa match was so large that they showed the thing on close-captioned TV in the Ed Center to handle the people who couldn't get in. Got the largest crowd of the year last night (but didn't sell out ) It comes down to two things: 1) Big UNI fans relish the chance to beat the Hawks 2) UNI students who are not big UNI fans are still big Iowa fans When I was in school, the nights when Iowa played basketball were big events, and everyone watched. Everyone went to the dorm lounges to watch the game. Yet UNI games weren't even on TV, and not a lot of people went (except when they played Iowa in CF, when they got a crowd of 22, 797).

I guess it depends on how you define rivalry.
The matches last year didn't appear to be overly competitive (UNI swept Iowa and beat Iowa State 3-1 with the scores of the last three games not being very close).
In terms of attendance the Iowa match only had ~1500 fans - though with it being at Iowa in the Carver Hawkeye Arena that is perhaps a significant increase over the normal Iowa attendance. For the Iowa State match there were ~2000 fans which seems to have been a common number from looking at other UNI home matches.
I can see your point though regarding the rivalry between the schools as a whole and the atmosphere the comes from any events between those schools.

It's about 4-5 times their normal attendance. Of course, that was because about 1000 of the fans had come down from UNI. I can't find anything for anytime ISU played in Iowa City.
