Wait, wha?! Cal won a set AT Stanford? All bias aside, do you guys really think that Stanford is the 6th best team in the country?

Cold night in Palo Alto, so even games tough for Stanford and odds tough for Cal with the pressure gradient in Maples. Also, senior night sometimes produces bad performances from seniors. They are playing in front of their parents who are in town for the match. Maybe extra pressure or time required to entertain the relatives. Foluke Akinradewo, for example, had a horrible senior night. Between the bad passing and poor location by Bugg, Stanford struggled. Set 2 was one of the worst they have played all year -- many hitting errors, bad passing, bad setting, you name it.

Not only that, Stanford won't reach 15 in each of those sets. Michigan has the best players in the nation. Cole is the top RS, setting is topnotch and their back row is fantastic. Knop IMHO is one of the top 3 OHs in the nation. Michigan deserves the #6 ranking more than Stanford, IMHO.

All bias aside, do you guys really think that Stanford is the 6th best team in the country? No way ... Michigan would have swept them tonight. Given the aforementioned loss to Indiana, I'm not sure Michigan would have beat them tonight. That being said, my question has nothing to do with Michigan or any other team other than Stanford. If you had to rank them, what does your eye test and head say about the Cardinal?

No, I think Stanford is the number 3 team this season. Is that what you meant?

Sbilo, your sarcasm overruns my cup. As I said to Hammer, my ask of what the Stanford faithful think about their beloved team has nothing to do with my team or any other. It's a genuine ask about Stanford and what you believe they should be ranked on a national scale, assuming you watch a lot of women's indoor volleyball and have a fair basis of comparison.

I think to answer this question we just tally up the teams I think are better: USC, UW, UCLA Hawaii PSU, Neb, Minny, Wisky Texas Then there are teams of about the same caliber: Florida, Purdue, Ohio State, Colorado State, Michigan (of course), UNC So I think a rank of about #13 seems about right, which also implies that Stanford could have trouble surviving the 2nd round. Their home court advantage isn't much of an advantage and if a hot team shows up in the 2nd round, then Stanford could fall.

Hammer, I think you are underestimating Stanford. I think #6 is about right.
Of course, we'll see how they stack up against UCLA Friday.

I hope they fair better than your assessment might suggest, but they do have issues.

I haven't seen most of the teams in the top 10 in person and find it very hard to evaluate a team watching on TV. I agree with johnbar that the UCLA match on Friday will be telling.
