Volleyball: Rice Demolishes Louisiana Tech

HOUSTON — Tessa Kuykendall posted a .700 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 20 attempts and no errors to lead Rice to a 30-19, 30-16, 30-15 victory over Louisiana Tech Thursday night at Autry Court in Western Athletic Conference action.
The win improves the Owls' record to 15-2 on the year, matching the best start in program history set in 1987. Rice also stayed undefeated in WAC play, moving to 5-0 on the year. Louisiana Tech falls to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in the WAC.
The Owls jumped out to a 4-1 start in game one with a pair of kills from Kuykendall, but the Lady Techsters would not go away. Louisiana Tech stayed close and after a service ace, closed to within one at 12-11. A Lindsey Carter kill put the ball back Rice's hands as she and Rebecca Kainz sparked a 6-0 rally as the Owls pulled away. After Carter's initial kill, the pair combined for a big block, then Kainz scored three of Rice's next four points on kills. Kuykendall finished the frame with six kills on eight swings.
It was a similar start in game two with Rice taking an early lead, but Louisiana Tech staying close. This time the Lady Techsters would tie the scoring at 8-8, then trailed by a single point at 11-10 before the Owls picked up the pace and pulled away with an 10-1 run. Rice closed out the game on a 6-0 run after a Catherine DuPont kill and some solid serving from Yvette Kirk. Rebeca Pazo paced the Owls' offense in the frame with five kills on 10 swings with no errors.
After trading points to start game three, Rice slowly pulled away. A pair of 6-0 runs put the Owls on top 22-9 as the team cruised to victory. Pazo., Carter and Kuykendall all shined offensively in the set as Pazo and Kuykendall notched seven and five kills, respectively, with no errors and Carter added six kills.
Pazo led all hitters with 15 kills, followed closely by Kuykendall and Carter with 14 each. Pazo also added 10 digs for her 12th double double of the year. Olaya Pazo led the Rice defenders with 12 digs, while Kirk finished with 11. Setter Kristina Hoban had her ninth double double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs.
As a team, the Owls posted a sterling .463 hitting percentage (59-9-108) while limiting the Lady Techsters to just .073 hitting for the match. Rice also controlled the net, blocking down six balls to Louisiana Tech's one. Kuykendall, who ranks 23rd in the nation in blocking, had a hand in four of the Owls' blocks.
Natalie Shipp led the Lady Techsters' offense with seven kills, while Heather Anderson came off the bench to record 11 digs.
Rice continues its four-match home stand on Saturday, hosting Southern Methodist at 2 pm at Autry Court.
