I'm disappointed for Pepperdine. Great bunch of girls, and love the coaches too.

So, (ruffda), where are you now in your love-hate relationship? Some other thread focused on whether the loss of one key player hurt or spurred on a team. Seems that for Pep, the loss of Wilkins was of the former. So far, the loss of their only-ever AA seems to have pushed Santa Clara forward, but only time will tell. . . .

Can someone from Pepperdine tell us what the problem is this year? Are they dealing with injuries? Were they just overrated? Is this a particularly young team that will mature and eventually be formidable? Just curious as I know most of us So. California VB fans expected much more out of them this year.

They are riddled with injuries. In Hawaii they had the libero hitting outside. No depth at ANY position because of injuries. Milo's game is WAY off too.

So who is injured for them now? In the box score it looked liked the players that normally play for them and LMU is just better. People are not taking into consideration the loss of Wilkens and Hache. Those were two great players and they just aren't as good without them. They will have to probably win almost all their remaining games to have a shot at being 1st-3rd in the WCC and a shot at going to the tournament. No mistakes against a Gonzaga or Portland. Wow to go from ranked 4th in the country last year going into the tournament to not ranked this year and in danger of not going is amazing.

And I don't care what anyone says about injuries, you can predict them and in many cases you can not prevent them. Teams get players "as is" and many times you are NOT aware of their medical histories, etc. and thus injuries can be very unforseen and devastating to the program. It's sad but true.

Wow. Makes me less motivated to drive to Malibu to watch them play. When volleyball is not played well, it's ugly. Sad to say, but the sport needs to be played at a high level to be entertaining.

I think it's a combo of the graduation of seniors (they lose a lot of offensive firepower) and the injuries to key ball handlers. Pepperdine had already struggled w/ passing and digging over the last two years. Losing a few players to injuries makes it pretty darn impossible for them to do well.

They are young and they lost two key players to graduation. The injuries have hurt their development, not kept them from playing. This team will be much better as it gets older. I think too much was riding on their talent and the injuries just exacerbated the weaknesses. I think it was more others' expectation than actual fault of their own. Milo's struggles also hurts.
