No. 9 Women's Volleyball Defeats Purdue, 3-0, Wins 16th Consecutive Match
Buckeye Stacey Gordon collects 22.5 points with a match-high 22 kills.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind 22.5 points from Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario), the ninth-ranked Ohio State women's volleyball team defeated Purdue, 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-24) Saturday night in West Lafayette. The Buckeye victory keeps Ohio State undefeated at 16-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big Ten. The Boilermaker loss makes Purdue 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten. Gordon produced 22 kills (.525) and an assist block and added 15 digs. Also in double-figure points for OSU were Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) with 15 points and Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) 10. Stevens recorded 11 kills, three ace serves and a solo blocks with Meyer adding nine kills and two assist blocks. For Purdue, Leach Wischmeier had a team-high 14 points on 14 kills with Kim McConaha adding 13.5 points with 11 kills, a solo block and three assist blocks.
With game one tied at 16, two kills from OSU's Meyer opened an 18-16 Buckeye lead. With OSU leading 21-20, a Purdue service error started a six-point Buckeye run. Three Stevens' kills and two Purdue errors opened a 27-21 Ohio State lead. At 28-21, kills by Wischmeier and McConaha cut the Buckeye lead to 28-23. A Purdue service error set game point at 29-23. Marisa Main's (So., Louisville, Ky.) ace serve ended the game at 30-23. Ohio State hit .600 in the game to .289 for Purdue.
Purdue began game two with a Marie Franke kill and with three OSU errors took a 4-0 lead. With Purdue leading, 6-3, blocks by Gordon and Meyer and Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and kills by Gordon and McCarthy gave OSU a 7-6 lead. The game remained close with the Buckeyes holding the lead until a Franke kill tied the game at 24. Tied at 25, kills by Gordon and Main and a Purdue error put Ohio State ahead, 28-25. A Samantha Mader kill cut the lead to 28-26 but Meyer's kill set game point at 29-26. Ohio State closed out the game at 30-26 with a McCarthy-Meyer block. The Buckeyes hit .415 for the game to .324 for the Boilermakers.
With kills by McConaha and Renata Dargan, Purdue opened game three with a 2-0 lead. OSU's Stevens, with a kill, tied the game at three. Buckeye kills from McCarthy and Gordon and an ace serve from Stevens gave OSU a 6-3 lead. Purdue cut the lead to 6-5 but a seven-point run by Ohio State opened the lead to 13-5. The run began with kills from Meyer and McCarthy. A McCarthy-Mapp block, two Gordon kills and two Purdue errors completed the scoring run. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a Gordon kill ended the game at 30-23, winning the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .362 for the game to .211 for Purdue.
For the match, Ohio State hit .441 to Purdue's .266. The Buckeyes had a 63-54 advantage in kills and a 4-2 margin in aces. Purdue gave up six service errors to four for OSU. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 54-35 margin in digs with Boilermaker Daren Poe collecting a match-high 16. At the net, OSU had a 6.5 to five advantage in team blocks. OSU's McCarthy (4 assists) and Purdue's McConaha (1 solo, 3 assists) shared match-high honors with four blocks each. Buckeye setter Main had a match-high 51 assists with Purdue's Dargan collecting 37.
Ohio State returns home next weekend to continue Big Ten play. The Buckeyes will host Michigan State Friday and Michigan Saturday in St. John Arena. Match time is 7 p.m. each night.
