I think the point some are trying to make about assistant to HC is more that Stevie wasn't the top assistant at her respective program, Salima was. So it's not often you see the second assistant get a HC job in the Pac. That's the only surprising thing to me. Keegan Cook was the second assistant at Washington. Leslie Gabriel (nee Tuiasosopo), the first assistant ("associate head coach") didn't want the job. There are a couple ways of looking at this. Hire an experienced successful mid-major head coach (ala Watson), then see him jump to another better paying opportunity in several years. On the other hand, if you can find a young assistant coach with a great pedigree who knocks it out of the park in the interview, you've got a good chance they'll stick around for the next ten years, or longer, at a lower salary than if hiring an experienced head coach. The template for this kind of hire was Washington hiring Heather Tarr as their softball head coach at age 29 (Keegan Cook was also 29 when hired), with no previous head coaching experience. She's now going into her 12th season at UW, with a 443-196-1 record, 11 straight NCAA Tournaments, nine Super-Regionals, four WCWS appearances, and one National Championship.

As Gnu2vball pointed out, maybe now we'll see more matches between ASU and PSU during the non-conference portion of the schedule.

Will Stevie retain Erica Lott as one of the assistants? Or does she still hold a grudge for getting knocked out of the tourney in '07?

Who can forget that match? UW had made three straight Final Four's and both Stevie and Erica were seniors. That upset and deep tournament run helped Jason get the ASU job.

Stevie will do well. She has the experience at this age that many did not have when they assumed the Head Coach job: Russ Rose and John Dunning to name just two.

IMO this is an underwhelming hire for ASU.

So, she's inexperienced, young, female, and black. And she's a Husky. Which part is underwhelming?

I don't get this hire at all. Stevie coached my daughter in club. She remains one Of her favorite coaches - very firm direct yet still a real people person. IMO this makes a natural coach. Since her playing days she has really worked up the ranks of assistant coaching positions and been constantly part of successful programs. She is bright young ambitious with a great work ethic. I think Asu is lucky to get her. Stevie also coached my daughter in club. She remains, hands down, her least favorite coach she had in 12 seasons of club and college.

It's a little humorous to see posters suggest this is an underwhelming or bad hire by ASU.
In the real world, people like Mussie don't get an assistant coaching job at Virginia and NC State unless she is able to impress the people making the hiring decision. In the real world, she doesn't get hired by Russ Rose unless Rose is impressed with her and the people at her previous position have positive things to say about her.
In the real world, she doesn't stay on the staff of someone like Rose unless she is qualified and effective.
In the real world, she doesn't get a head coaching job at ASU unless someone like Rose gives her a good recommendation. And in the real world she doesn't get the job unless she also impresses the AD at ASU and anyone else who was involved in the hiring process.
But of course, anonymous posters on Volleytalk often like to think they know more than all those other people who are actually doing the work.

I am surprised by this hire. Stevie being a great player and a good assistant #2 coach aside, jumping to a PAC head coaching job should require greater credentials!!

I think Nollan would have been a better hire but he went GCU. He probably saw a brighter future and chance for instant improvement at GCU. I say these mainly because of the conference play.
