Well, there are 2 coaches on staff from PSU, neither of which this story fits well (again, especially Aird) yes, even the coolest/calmest coaches can lose it once in awhile. Given the coach asked the player & parent to step outside, maybe it was a calculated move to wake the team up because truly...NOT Aird's style. I still question the validity/details of the story but even if true...no player should question playing for him. He's a great coach. Appreciate you taking the time to set the record straight...I will be sending that same dad a text here in a bit and let him know that if his daughter has not decided perhaps he give them a second chance...she was VERY impressed with the facilities and really liked the campus and location close to DC You are welcome. Best of luck to the player. If Maryland is recruiting her, she must be a strong player. And yes, giving them a second consideration would be a wise choice. He's a quality guy and usually very matter of fact. I, personally, have never heard him yell/curse at/ try to degrade any player. He is a great teacher of the game.

One other thought: If it really was Aird, and the behavior is a concern, how about you address it directly with the coach during a visit? Or ask the players how often that happens?

I have heard that Lauren Carlini will play that role when the Badgers are not playing well and that she can really hit home with choice words. Saw Coach Aird at the Windy City Qualifier last week, seemed to be a very nice man, only spoke with him for about a minute. As far as Maryland's chances at a bubble, it's going to be a tough road for them and they need to be consistent every game for it to happen. Losses to teams like Indiana and Rutgers cannot happen and they will need to at least split with teams like Northwestern, Purdue and the Michigans to have a shot. However without a couple of signature wins over the top 5 in the Big Ten I do not think they get a look from the committee. I am pulling from them, I love what Aird is doing and his recruiting is bringing in some very high quality players. As I said, I am pulling for them to make the tourney but I am not sure if this is the year it happens.

Were the recruit and dad invited to visit the locker room between sets 2 & 3?

The dad who told me this is a straight shooter, exec type, and it was definately the Big 10 terps...I dont even know the name of the coach, but he said that he came from PSU...not sure if that fits, and as I told him, perhaps it was a once in a blue moon thing, but even if not, that most of the top 10 coaches in womens and mens basketball all use colorful language...this includes one of my best friends at a top 10 bball school, great guy, goes to church and is even called on to lead us in prayer, but in practice he can let a few things fly that he would not want my daughter to hear In the interest of fairness I do know for fact Maryland does not go to the locker room between games 2-3 and that neither recruits or parents go to team discussion between games 2-3. While I obviously wasn't there, it would be out of character for their staff to act in that way, especially if there was a top recruit present. As this didnt involve you or your daughter, is there a reason you felt the need to document an interaction in which you were not present?

Nothing gets a Monday off to a great start like some good ol' hearsay.
I heard from the guy who cuts my neighbor's lawn that his daughter's boyfriend's dad heard the cousin of a recruit say that someone saw Coach Aird winning the Nobel Prize in Economics. Again, I wasn't there, but this is what I heard.

Were the recruit and dad invited to visit the locker room between sets 2 & 3? No recruit or parent is, as they don't even go to their locker room.

I just find this situation a little confusing. At dd's school, recruits and their parents don't interact with coaches or players during matches and would not be invited to the locker room. If I was a coach, a parent and recruit standing outside my locker room would send up red flags.
But what do I know? I'm just a parent.

Several top schools invite their top recruits into there teams locker rooms, for two reasons. First to give the kid a chance to see the girls and the room, and second to give all the girls a chance to speak up if they feel there may be a problem with that incoming player(which virtually never happens) but allows the players to feel involved.
Second once committed no matter how early, you are treated as a member of the team as much as possible, which includes being allowed in the room before and after matches, especially after a win.

Good advice, I have spoken to Aird a few times. He is a driven, smart and capable coach who really wants to build a great volleyball program as quickly as possible. That combination is going to make him aggressive at times.
Listen to Russ Rose talk about building Penn State; you do not get to be a great coach without a driven past. Your kid will get better under him, it's in the coaches interest for your kid to improve. You just have to decide if he is the type that motivates her, or better yet let your daughter be the biggest part of that conversation.
Then finally all that has to happen after you determine if the school is a good fit academically and career wise.

I understand showing a recruit a locker room, I just can't see it happening during a match. And this guy said it happened between sets 2 and 3. That's what I think is strange.

Happens frequently before and after matches, not sure if I recall halftime, but it would not surprise me if the kid had committed. The thinking is the quicker you can get the kid less nervous and more invested in the program the better.
It's a battle for these kids, their being courted. It changes once you sign, then the real world starts.

Yes, recruits are in meetings, pre-match and post on a frequent basis. During the match they are sitting in stands and don't know of many cases where kids are in the locker room between games, in-match.

This would mean she would not have been in the locker room as a commit.

Looks like we beat this dead horse into the ground! Let's get back to talking about the team!!! I'm hoping that Aird takes on a more challanging schedule in the spring. Even if they get beat it will better prepare them for the tough Big10 schedule.
