Pre-conference scheduling will tell us what Aird thinks about his team's prospects. He's not shied away from tough competition, saying that you have to play the best to be the best (yes), and that he wants his team to see the high level that they're expected to play at. But he's also added some winnable matches to the schedule.

Up until this season making the post season as an at large wasnt even in the realm of possibility so pre-conference schedule isnt super critical. As they move closer to that level, scheduling/rpi becomes extremely important. Scheduling for teams who have potential to make tournament has become less about being tested, and more about math.

Well said with "realm of possibility" and "moving closer to that level". They are definitely improving and going in right direction, but not near a bubble team yet as the OP contends: "The Terps should definitely climb to becoming a bubble team this year depending on non-conference scheduling and how well they can beat the teams they're supposed to (rutgers)..." If they play a slightly improved non-conference schedule and win a couple more matches in middle of B1G, Maryland RPI may go from 110 to 80 or so. That is what I'm hoping Aird has planned for the next step. Going from a 110 RPI to 50 RPI in one year is very, very hard.

My daughters team played WVBA this weekend at JVA Worlds and I got to see SAMANTHA DRECHSEL play. Looks like the Terps have another good one coming in 2017. She and Gia together are definitely going to be B1G level pins. Apparently she sets too, but wasn't when we played. A fantastic all-around talent. Congrats Maryland, the future looks really great!

Sam Drechsel is a force to be reckoned with on the right side. You are correct - she also sets and has great hands!! Between Gia Milana on the left, Sam on the right, and Katie Meyers in the middle....wow! Teams will not know who to block and they will be a blocking force as well! Can't wait!!!!!!! I've heard that Milana has already picked up tons of strength and polish in her early training this season (she went to Maryland early) so people might be surprised when they see her play in Indy with the USA Collegiate team.

This is a great schedule for team development - Terps can challenge themselves against some strong teams but also pick up some wins, but may be challenging RPI-wise if they are aiming for the tournament this year. They scheduled themselves at least a few losses OOC, which negates the benefit of playing those good teams and maybe sniping a win, butthe bad teams will absolutely destroy the RPI (particularly Delaware St. & Chicago State, but Georgetown and EMU with a new coach can be shaky as well, esp. since they already have to deal with Rutgersx2 in conference). I think Princeton and Towson can help mitigate that though.

I agree with c4ndle, a good schedule for development progression, but not great for RPI. They may have more losses pre-conference, but should still be about .500
This schedule should prepare them better for B1G, and hopefully help get them a couple more conference wins versus middle teams.
If they start competing with mid-level B1G better, they can adjust schedule next year to be better for RPI. But this schedule is a necessary first (second) step.
