BEAVERS LOOK TO GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK WITH A VISIT TO THE BAY AREA
THIS WEEK: Oregon State (8-6, 2-3 Pacific-10) travels to No. 12 Stanford (11-4, 4-1) on Friday, October 15, before visiting No. 13 California (8-6; 3-2) on Saturday, October 16. Friday's match against the Cardinal is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., while Saturday's match against the Bears will start at 7:30 p.m.
A LOOK AT No. 12 STANFORD: The Cardinal enter the week with an 11-4 overall record and 4-1 mark in the Pac-10. Stanford is 5-1 in matches played in Palo Alto on the season. As a squad, the Cardinal is hitting .271, compared to the oppositions .175 mark. Olympian Ogonna Nnamani leads the team with 328 kills (5.66 kpg) and a .320 hitting percentage. Her 1,955 career kills are a Stanford school record and rank in third place all-time in the Pac-10. Sophomore Kristin Richards adds 3.91 kills per game and a team-leading 3.76 digs.
SERIES RECORDS: Oregon State has never beaten Stanford in 38 previous meetings. The streak marks the longest span that the Beavers have gone without a victory against a single opponent.
THAT'S TOUGH: Oregon State has taken Stanford University to five games in just two matches during the 38 meetings between the squads. In 2002 the Beavers dropped a 30-24, 20-30, 16-30, 33-31, 5-15 match against the defending national champion Cardinal in Palo Alto. The other five-game match between the Beavers and Cardinal dates back to the 1986 campaign.
A LOOK AT No. 13 CALIFORNIA: The Bears enter the week with an 8-6 overall record and 3-2 mark in the Pac-10. Cal is coming off a sweep of then-ranked No. 2 USC last Saturday. The victory marked the first for the Golden Bears against the Women of Troy in 24 matches, dating back to 1991. Freshman Angie Pressey leads the team with 3.89 kills per game, while junior Gabrielle Abernathy has a team-high 177 kills (3.77 kpg).
SERIES RECORDS: Oregon State has a 16-29 all-time record in the series against California. The Beavers have won five of the last eight meetings between the squads, including three victories in Berkeley over the last four years. Cal swept the season series in 2003.
LOOKING BACK AT UA: Oregon State opened last Friday's match against No. 21 ranked Arizona with a 30-25 victory in game-one, but the Wildcats' offense came alive and UA responded to win three straight and earn the victory. Sophomore Abby Windell led the Beavers with 16 kills and a .483 hitting percentage. Brittany Cahoon chipped in nine kills with a .353 hitting percentage, while Nina Baltimore boasted a match-high 22 digs. Kim Glass and Meghan Cumpston each recorded double-doubles for the Wildcats and Glass led all players with 22 kills. OSU held a 67-54 advantage in digs, but UA hit .241 for the match compared to the Beavers' .152 clip.
LOOKING BACK AT ASU: For the second straight match sophomore Abby Windell led Oregon State in kills and hitting percentage, but Arizona State recorded the 3-0 victory last Saturday in Corvallis. Windell hit .571 and recorded a match-high 14 kills, but OSU managed just .109 hitting as a team, while ASU held a .306 attack percentage. Beaver junior Kristy Mortensen tallied a career-best 11 assists. Three Sun Devil players reached double figures in kills with Nicole Morton's 13 leading the way. Colette Meek chipped in 11 kills and nine blocks.
AHEAD OF THE PAC: Oregon State sophomore Abby Windell is hitting a team-best .426 during Pac-10 matches. Windell also leads the squad in kills (67), kills per game (3.72), service aces (0.44 sapg), and blocks (1.06 bpg), during conference matches.
CHECKING THE CAREER CHARTS: Senior Allison Lawrence registered her 1,000th career kill against University of Oregon on Sept. 24, and currently ranks in 9th place in the OSU record book with 1,058. Lawrence leads the squad with 198 kills (3.74 kpg) and has reached double figures in 11 of Oregon State's 14 matches. She could also reach 1,000 digs before the season ends. Lawrence came into this season with 629 career digs, but she had 388 digs as a junior, so a repeat performance would put her over 1,000. With 144 so far this year, her career total stands at 797.
BEAVERS IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Oregon State players have already earned several spots in the OSU record books with their performances this year. Abby Windell hit .704 against Saint Louis to break the OSU record for hitting percentage in a five-game match (it was also good for the fifth-best hitting percentage in any match. She had a career-high 20 kills in that match). Allison Lawrence had a career-high 28 kills in that same match, tying for 10th on OSU's single-match list. Desma Stovall's 75 assists against Saint Mary's puts her in a tie for sixth on that list.
