vs 5 Pac 12 teams... hopefully they can win sone and get into the tourney The non conference schedule is pretty solid: UCLA, Arizona St., California, Duke, San Diego, Colorado, LMU, Washington St., Pepperdine, highlight the non conference schedule. The Beach will have a solid resume--if they win most of these matches-- should they not win the Big West title.

California and WSU are not likely to help LBSU RPI unless they are much better than last season. Cal is playing an easier pre-conference so their record may be better than 9-22 this year. WSU is playing a tougher pre-conference schedule, so even if they are objectively better, their record may be worse. North Texas seems to be a good resume builder, besides the others you mentioned. But the best part of the LBSU schedule may be just leaving off Rutgers, OSU, and St. Mary's who killed their RPI last year.

The match for Long Beach State at Hawaii is their only match all season outside the Pacific Time Zone. A very travel friendly schedule. Hawaii trip, Portland, Sacramento (for UC Davis), SLO and San Diego...thats it for notable travel.

Hawaii trip, Portland, Sacramento (for UC Davis), SLO and San Diego...thats it for notable travel. overall a solid schedule, lots of competitive non-conference matches against quality opponents kind of wishing they were playing Harvard (instead of Arizona State or Pepperdine) in their tournament - Harvard should be good for RPI and having LMU/Duke/Pepp/ASU over 3 days is gonna be a tough gauntlet. The stretch from the Colorado game until they play San Jose is gonna be make or break - including 5 Pac-12 opponents over 8 matches in 18 days - will be interesting - can they have a solid winning record against that group will show whether they can challenge Hawaii Colorado Cal Wash State LMU Duke Pepperdine Arizona State UCLA

I am really excited about this upcoming season as LBSU has a good blend of returning players and incoming freshman. Only daw back with the youth is that the team needs to start fast and make a statement in the preseason, and that does not give the newcomers much time to learn how Brian likes things to be done, pick up the system, and mesh as a team. Should be a good conference race too.

Should be a good conference race too. I think it will all come down to the setting. Will BG go with RS sophomore setter Missy Owens or the unproven, highly regarded, FR setter Morgan Dewyer? All the ingredients--an experienced front line and solid defensive core--return for the Beach for a successful season. As with most Gimmillaro teams, this team should be playing its best volleyball near the end of the season.

She started playing well towards the end of the season last year and I feel like with some confidence she could be a good power OH for LBSU. The Beach have some good options at MB so hopefully they will be able to contribute right away. The loss of Hudson will be big, but hopefully someone will be able to be a solid replacement.

This LBSU team will be young with most of their starters being freshman or sophomores. The only upperclassman starters will be Murray and Barber. I see three sophomores and 3 freshman in the regular rotation.

The second outside is probably up in the air but Kruidhof is the returning starter based on the end of the season lineup. However, with Brinke returning from injury she also has a good shot and she was a freshman starter the previous year. Megan maybe the better attacker right now but Brinke is a better blocker and back row player. Throw in a couple of freshman so who knows who the second left will be. Someone is going to have to take the spot and not just expect to get it.

I would guess the lineup as follows:
I really don't see 3 frosh in the starting rotation, unless there is some off the charts frosh coming in
OH1: Barber OH2: Brinke Opp: Grahovac MB1: Murray MB2: Norveel or Xue - Lib: Wilson S: Owens is my bet
DS1 & DS2: up in the air, either of Owens or Dewyer if they are not setting is possible, Kruidhof is possible if she's not the starting OH
Kruidhof has to show a lot more to overcome Brinke, and Brinke has to show she can get back to form before the injury. Can't rule out Beddingfield's potential as a front-court OH if she developed since last season

My starting lineup would basically be the same with the exception of Dewyer at setter and Harward at libero. I would also have Wilson at DS1 and possibly Paulin at DS2. Dwyer and Harward may move into the starting lineup after the opening weekend or two but my guess would be sooner rather than later.
I like Brinke because she has a good block and back row skills but she is a below average attacker. Plus she injured her swinging shoulder. LBSU needs some fire power from their OH2 and that is where Kruidoff outshines Brinke. I would also not be surprised if Paulin is considered for the OH2 later in the season. Owens is a serviceable setter but does not have the feel for the game or skill set for a starter on a top 25 team.
Cal Poly... do they play volleyball?

Hannah Pauling. From the LBSU presser on her signing:
"Pauling comes to Long Beach State from Murrieta Valley High School and Mavericks Volleyball Club in Corona, Calif. She is a 5-foot-10 outside hitter who also brings plenty of beach volleyball experience to LBSU."
