Doug Beal Feeling Heat to Extend Invitation to Destinee Hooker
Doug Beal, CEO of USAV, the governing body for the US Women’s National Volleyball Team has come under recent pressure to explain why Coach Karch Kiraly continues to refuse to extend an invitation to Destinee Hooker after their personal spat in 2013 precipitated Hooker walking away from the team.
It is understood by all USNT watchers that had the US team won Olympic Gold in 2012 this behavior by Coach Kiraly would just not be possible and he would have been expected to heal the rift and ensure that Hooker was in the gym for the US team.
The pressure seems to be coming from the University of Texas athletic department via interim athletic director Mike Perrin. UT is miffed that one of their most high profile athletic alumni is missing an opportunity to perform in the Rio Olympics and with it the many mentions regarding her UT volleyball connection.
Perrin has identified the major source of complaint among the Kiraly apparatchiks against Hooker as her reputation for being a Diva and disruptive to team cohesion. He has thusly mounted a charm campaign specially focusing on her recent successful year for her Korean team IBK. He has garnered testimonial’s from fans, teammates, and coaches that bespeak to her complete change of attitude and the impressive team leadership and bonding she provided as a young mother with baby daughter in tow in family friendly Korea.
Beal is also feeling pressure from Hooker’s many connections in the African American professional sports community where there is a whisper campaign that Kiraly is the equivalent of the former Eagle coach, Chip Kelly, in dealing with strong African American sports personalities and that this is a personal vendetta that has no place as regards the patriotic nature of Olympic sports. Beal is afraid that this might bring out the dreaded race card and prove a major distraction to the USWNT.
Which leads us to the leak of what is purported to be a rough draft of a specially created USWNT contract that will be the basis for extending an invite to Destinee Hooker. Whether she would accept the terms of conditions is another story. The key for Doug Beal is that he head off any controversy this close to the Rio Olympics and that he protect his coach who has just signed an extension for the next Olympic quadrennial extending to 2020 in Tokyo.
It will be of great interest to see how this plays out in the coming weeks as Hooker has announced through her social media links that she has reentered the gym and is in full training mode to be ready for the 2017 Club season where she will be one of the hottest free agents on the market.
Whether she has time to make an impact on this summer’s Rio 16 Olympic team we will just have to wait and see. Certainly her 2015 performance in Korea for IBK shows that she still has the athleticism that made her the world #1 opposite coming off of her 2012 Olympics performance.
