Troll could you please share what you feel the ACVA did wrong and which changes you would implement to make the pairs event better? They had it perfect from 2012 - 2015. The only thing the people that voted it to the sidelines (NCAA championship committee) didn't like was one school dominating the field through 2017 and beyond. It wasn't a matter of money, it wasn't that it took an extra day, it wasn't for the lack of the greatest percentage of coaches and athletes wanting it. It was coach and her band of friends social engineering the sport so they might have a chance to win, which has backfired on them and will continue to. Referring to Matthies or Niles?

I'd imagine he's referring to Nina, who has in the past voiced opposition to a pairs championship

Thoughts: I actually love 'pair' competitions as much, if not more, than the 'team'. It must be those darn Olympic competitions I grew up watching. For the NCAA: Keep funding the 8 teams for the "Team Competition" (the 3 days only), but continue providing the facilities+ for the next 3 days(?) for a 'single elimination' "Pairs Competition". The costs of sending the pairs themselves would be on the schools they represent or on the players themselves - an "invitation" that each school could decline. I'm sure the TV Networks would be very happy with this, and actually pay a little more $'s which would more than cover the additional 3 day cost to the NCAA. And I feel the pairs competition will have a much higher viewing audience than the team competition. As for the ranking of pairs: A system would have to be devised. Maybe an invitation (auto invitations) to each Beach schools' 1st pair, too which a school can decline, and some additional invitations for some schools' 2nd pair via some type of ranking system. An outtake from an VBM interview: [Jeff Hall (head coach/Hawaii): “Programs that are trying to grow are going to be left behind and maybe get dropped in the future because they are not worthy of having post season experience. That’s how you’re measured often as a coach or as a program, and when you’re cutting out the pairs, you’re cutting out the opportunity. It’s fun to see other schools, smaller schools, schools that don’t have the budget, giving them the opportunity. To lose that is kind of sad.”]

I think it's great to have this competition on the West Coast while the team competition is on the other side of the country.

Maybe this deserves its own thread?

I with you Johnbar, I debated if to post this here or not..this tourney is the "pairs competition" for now and the selection is through the NCAA college game with NCAA and AVCA people. This tourney will influence what happens down the road with the NCAA getting there pairs competition going and when they do it I feel, maybe this tourney buys the NCAA more time OR becomes the NCAA championship pairs competition later on...that's is why I posted the info here, otherwise I wouldn't have.

I'm into it. I like that there's a boys championship as well. I'm not sure where the National Collegiate Beach Teams compete.
I like tying it to the USA National team BUT: 1) Where does this put the McNamaras? Do they compete and are just ineligible for the berths? 2) In other USA trials, you would see a lot of cross-school pairs. Those pairs might be better quality than where they are playing in the NCAA.

Interesting idea, but I share your concerns. The GOOD: Not concurrent with team competition. It appears they will compete at Hermosa Beach. Combined college men's beach tournament with it. Admission is free. The BAD: They appear to just be using the AVCA pairs model for everything else, which will NOT help get a NCAA pairs championship. Vague, non-criteria based qualification which combines 3 different methods (team finish, NCAA pairs results, USAV ranking). And wild-cards. Hilarious. Yeah, I'm sure NCAA will do something like that....not. The selection committee is huge. And does NOT really include NCAA reps - just 6 college coaches. Their tournament format choice that will not be used by NCAA. Double elim over two days would be better. NCAA using single elim alone is more likely than pool + single elim. This is really not rocket science, why not use an existing model like NCAA tennis, with a couple tweaks?
