Interesting that they kept the rule changes.
Net serve: seems odd that it is one way the entire match but different once it goes to side out scoring. Think they should have it one way, whichever they choose, the entire match. From a fan perspective, kind of odd to watch a match where a net serve that drops over is a point...but not at the end. If a casual fan is watching, they probably have no idea what is going on.
Switching to side-out scoring once you hit match point: I sort of get this to provide a tad more "suspense" to the end of a match where a team rarely comes back from say a 20-17 deficit in rally scoring. Assuming this was possibly made for TV reasons as well. My one gripe with this is the following: IF you have 2 teams that are going back and forth and just continuously siding out in the 3rd game . It is 7-7, 10-10....all the way to 13-13. A great battle. Team A serves to Team B and Team B successfully sides out (rally score still in play). Score is now Team B 14, Team A 13. It is now match point and it switches to side-out scoring. Team B serves Team A, Team A sides out and....doesn't get a point. For a game that has gone back and forth the entire match, Team A now has to get 3 side out scores, Team B just 1 to win the match. If they are going to do something funky at the end, they should switch it to side out score 1) Once a team is at match point AND 2) once the trailing team makes it's 1st serve.
The whole point is to create a more thrilling ending but in essence, once a team gets to match point, the trailing team whom is now serve receiving and has statistically a good chance to win the point...does not get rewarded with a point if they do side out and thus make the match closer. If they are going to get squirrely with the rules at the end (which I think make no sense anyhow), at least let the trailing team attempt to get their normal "rally" point on serve receive when it is match point...then switch to side out scoring from there on out. Seems like the rule is to create an opportunity, albeit a small one, for a team to come back using side out scoring but the trailing team is automatically penalized somewhat when the other team gets to match point and serves as trailing team loses opportunity of an easier point from rally scoring one last time.
Final thought: From a fan perspective, I think the game can be harder to watch for a casual fan once you start watching the elite players play. They are so darn good now (and tall), that is is Serve, serve receive, set, kill....point over. Walk around some, repeat...serve, serve receive, set, kill...maybe a player goes and cleans glasses off... Players are so skilled now that there is limited action (more so in the mens game imo) due to lack of many longer points that are at times more fun to watch from a fan point of view.

The point do-over just kills me. I can't believe AVP was dumb enough to actually add that.

Does it really matter? I love how people get so uptight over a rule change, "how dare you touch MY sport?" Professional organizations are constantly changing their rules and formats, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NASCAR etc. They changed it, they feel it is better for the game, nothing to stress out over.
Calm down and enjoy this upcoming weekend.

They can change the rules, but do-over's are just stupid. Don't like the rule? Change it. Make it out. Do-over's are something 12 year old kids do out in the front yard.

Yes, it does matter! The AVP thinks that if they tinker enough, then they will become the NFL, NBA, etc. They just cannot accept that we are what we are. No, we should not stop trying to grow the game, but everyone who enjoys those major sports know the basic rules. Volleyball is trying to change the game, not enhance it or tinker with it. How are we supposed to build a bigger fan base if we keep changing the dang rules every year...and then back to the original rules once they see the new ones SUCK? Maybe try a little integrity and reality about what the game is and what it isn't.

I don't think Donald Sun, or anyone in beach volleyball, expects the sport to gain the popularity of the "Big Four" MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL. In a ideal world (as in a perfect utopia) the AVP would be similar to tennis: a sport that most casual fans ignore most of the year, but still tune in during the big events (ie, Wimbledon, US Open). Not to generalize, but I'm sure many many people know of Roger Federer and Serena Williams, even if they only follow them once or twice a year. If the AVP had a similar situation (and the same amount of media coverage), it would be amazing.
That said, that is a loooooooong way off, if ever. To face facts, most people expect diehard fans (and even sponsors themselves) view the beach game as nothing more than athletes in swimwear playing for an hour or so. So the AVP is trying anything, anything at all, just to get some more eyeballs and exposure, no matter how little it may be, and whether it ultimately works or not. Everyone wants to grow the game, yet one of the big struggles seems to be in just getting attention to the sport, and simply holding onto it.
