I think most people like him but there is the obvious question of age. He graduated college in 1977 so he's gotta be 62 or older right? Obviously you can maintain a program at that age (Haley, Rose, Dunning, Banachowski, etc) but as a rebuild job, that doesn't leave a huge window of opportunity.

A much better question than his age is his ability to coach at this level and whether he is even an improvement over Feller. Cal is the premiere public university in the country (and certainly in the PAC 12, for those who don't agree with the first point). It can, and should, do better than it has.

Personally, I am a fan of Matt. I think he's a great choice. But I am interested to see how long the administration will give him to get things moving in the right direction.

Obviously you can maintain a program at that age (Haley, Rose, Dunning, Banachowski, etc) but as a rebuild job, that doesn't leave a huge window of opportunity. Dunning and Banchowski both retired at 65. Rose is "only" 63. Haley, OTOH, started his career coaching the dinosaurs.

Players and former players are pumped, so that is always a great sign to have buy in from those invested.

The next question is: will he retain the current staff or clean house?

This looks to be a financial move/stop gap measure. He will be ok IMO on X's and O's, but bringing in someone younger who can recruit is probably needed. Maybe behind the scenes the understanding is Cal will seek a higher profile candidate in a year or two.
