One of the most difficult positions I've been put in as a coach was a year when I had a girl on my team battling anorexia. She was up to about 95 pounds after being as low as 87 pounds. She was finally strong enough to be on the court a little bit (she was so weak at some points she could not even move for a ball) and we had a weaker opponent so she got a chance to play, be effective, and win. I was so happy for her. Then after the game the official scorer of the school we were playing at said something to her. I asked her what he said to her, and apparently the guy told her she needed to eat a cheeseburger. I've never in my life wanted to go back and hit someone as much as I did that moment (I am not a violent person AT ALL).
Cannot imagine what it is like to feel like these people do that do not feel like they belong where they are or hate what they look like, etc. Amazing story in that article. Hopefully she can continue to make progress.

Some loud mouth who makes snap assessments and says or does something very hurtful. It happens often and has an accumulative effect. People do not always mean bad, they are just not cognizant of how their words or actions affect others. I think it is great that you found a way for this player to have a positive experience.
