My thoughts - On the Men's final, pretty good match up. Thought Gibb played pretty mistake free, was definitely the veteran on the court. Taylor played well, didn't try to do too much. Handled the pressure. Slick for the most part did well, gave up a couple unforced errors, but also had some good plays at the net. Allen sided out pretty well, I can't recall 1 play he made on defense. Enjoyable match.
On the Women's, I thought Brooke and Summer choked a bit. I don't mean that to be harsh, I thought they were the best women's team this weekend, just didn't play up to where they were during the finals. These 2 were clearly the best teams this weekend. Looking for both to do well this week at The Hauge.
My takeaways from this weekend: Excited for Allen/Slick. Thought they did well getting out of pool play in Moscow, and followed it up with a strong showing here. They lost 1st round to the surprise team of the year in Ed/Zaun, but got revenge on them later. They also had a good win vs. Doherty / Hyden.
The not so Easy E's, Ed and Eric with back to back 5ths. Beat finalists Allen/Slick, big time win against Theo Brunner / Casey Patterson. Eric has probably clinched Rookie of the year.
Really surprised Santos / Schalk got by Patterson and Theo late on Saturday. Top 6 teams are playing pretty close this year. With a couple other teams sprinkled in who can snipe a match here and there. Santos / Schalk are a wild card that can screw up seeding, however teams may have some notes on them moving forward.
On the women's side, outside the top 2 teams cementing their place in the top 3 of US teams, can another team get some consistency? Day / Hochevar and Claes/Hughes are probably the leaders for this. Claes/Hughes had a disappointing finish, losing to Ledoux / McGuire to take a 7th.
Flint / Larsen made a nice run after losing to Sarah/Kelly in the 1st round.
Bensend/Urango haven't had a breakout win yet, their best is against Jennifer Fopma / Kelly Reeves in Austin where they had probably the easiest path into a SF i've seen.
Just some things I'm thinking about after NYC.

The AVPNext.com updated the points standing through NYC. Just wanted to see where Santos/Schalk fell. Not sure the AVP will jump 5 teams.

Just some things I'm thinking about after NYC. Just a couple notes. Eric was great but Schalk is going to be rookie of the year if he plays more events. Admittedly its not a hyper competitive field right now for best defender, but I think it may be Schalk (not the best at playing defense, but the best all around defender). Dalhausser/Schalk would be tough to score on. If Chaim doesn't play the next event, and there is a tight turnaround to Croatia where he is playing, who does Ricardo pick up? Santos/Zaun anyone? Ricardo is not on the Croatia list Bensend/Urango and Flint/Larsen should break up. Do we really need a 4th year of either team? Tri mentioned he was out with an autoimmune thing, I had understood it was an ankle previously. Anyone know details? Autoimmune, depending on what it is, can be managed but I cant think of anything that would keep him out this year but be playable in the future, also the treatment for most auto immune is steroid, I wonder if he would get an exemption

Mayer, Priddy and Zaun would probably all dump their partners for Ricardo and if it came with a year long commit, I think Billy might too.

And I'll take Nick and Taylor over Schalk too.

The only player even remotely challenging Taylor for best defender is Nick, and Taylor has separated himself from him too. The kid is just on another level from everybody defensively.

In terms of digging balls sure, but Chaim is so much better than either at siding out and putting the ball away. I wasn't particularly impressed with Chaim's defense but I'd rather have someone who puts the ball away. Could be just a small sample size because I haven't seen Chaim play a ton, but if I were him Id be looking at switching to his US passport for FIVB events

I just disagree. Can't see a stat breakdown but crabbs attack % was so much better in ny. I also think Crabb is far superior in the big defensive play and then transitioning to get the point. There's nothing more demoralizing than digging the opponents big bomb perfectly and then getting a big kill in transition. He did that about 6 times to a Ricardo and ricardo was just shaking his head.
Taylor really has an explosive live arm. He hits it a lot harder than Chaim. He also has all the shots and is very old school which I am partial to. Chaim has a really nice wrist. He hits these hard cuts that I think make it hard for players to defend. He gets these pretty crazy angles that players don't even go for and the ball is in by about 2 feet all of a sudden.
I watched Gibb Crabb play 3 matches and chaim and ricardo play 4. Just my opinion. I like chaim I think he's a good player. I don't think he makes punishing plays defensively and I think he has a tendancy to miss easy points on unforced errors. He's a very tough, good all around player.
Will be fun to watch how the season plays out. I haven't had as much fun watching the first few avps as I have this year in a long time.

Crabb's percentage was better largely based on the competition. Chaim/Ricardo played the top 4 seeds because they were a qualifier. Taylor played the 6, 11, 13, and 7 seeds The easiest illustration is Taylor played his first match against a pair of East Coast liberos, Chaim played Nick/Phil. Given the inferior competition they faced, you would expect Taylor to hold a massive advantage in hitting percentage if the two players were equally good, and I would expect a much larger gap

There seems to be more of a focus on The men's side this year than the last several years. People are excited about watching the men again. Some young 🔥irey players to watch. A lot of co fans I've spoken to are more excited about watching the men than the women this year.
