Question comes out of left field and I apologize, but is there a reason why all these fields are 16 team entries and not more? Will AVP ever grow to more entries? I believe it's a money thing. With 16 teams per gender, you can get by with only four courts and fewer referees. In addition, the top players probably prefer it because it means fewer games to play. From a spectator standpoint, I don't like it because it means more people crowded around fewer courts. 20 teams would be ideal on the men's side of things, there are at least 2 teams beyond the 4 qualifiers that could win games in Seattle just looking at the teams. Another one of those top seeds is gonna be sorry when they draw Santos, better off with a 2 seed in another portion of the draw.

Lane goes from qualifier 1 seed in NYC to tournament to 1 seed in San Fran. Say what you want about these international players but they have sure shook up these draws.

Kerri played underhand and got a 2nd at WSBVB, so everybody settle down...Not sure of the attendance impact as Huntington (bad weather), but NYC looked pretty packed....Anyway, she and Nicole will do "quite well" rest assured...

I recognize that gender equity is a goal of this AVP, but doesn't the women's draw feel too big? On the men's side low seeds pretty frequently make runs at least to the semis or close (Burik/Russ, Avery/Billy, Loomis/Lorenz last year, Zaun/Ed, Bomgrens a few years ago, etc) and some of the qualifier teams seem like they could upset a top seed (Rafu beat Casey/Jake last year) whereas on the women's side that doesn't seem to happen, or maybe it does, for me early round women's games are pretty painful to watch. An 8 team round robin draw for the women seems right and 24 or 32 for the men.

Well....I do respect your optimism Jim!! I dont share it but hope this team thrown together in the 11th hour does at least somewhat respectable. If not, we only have to watch it for about 4 or 5 tournaments.

Not for me, when you have these young players still in the Q (like these in NYC): Jace Pardon Lara Dykstra Katie Spieler Nicolette Martin Allie Wheeler Aurora Davis Bree Scarbrough Skylar Caputo the Witt Twins I think we are real close to having the best Women's side in quite a while. Colleges are just now starting to turn out 4 year beach players. When the top 8 schools are each putting a good team out every year, that's 16 new players that should have AVP MD potential.

Question, what is a good finish for Phil and Adam? looks like they are 6 seed, so they'll play the 11th (Bomgrens), then the 3rd which is Crabb/Rosie.
Basically, can they beat anyone ranked ahead of them? How hard does Phil go at this?

I am not sure Phil has that in him though. He has never really been a get on my back kind of guy. He definitely carries his share of water just with his incredible skills, but I've always thought he could have done more with things like going on two.

I think Phil is a "get on my back" player when the stakes are high, but not during early pool or bracket play. I will be surprised with anything better than a 5th, just by seeding. I do think their best chance at an upset is against Crabb/Rosie. Crabb's block isn't one that should scare Adam. Any other top 5 team has a big block that I don't think Adam will do well against. (your over on 2 would work here).

I agree with that. Before we know it the quality and level of the women's side will put the men to shame. You can't underestimate the NCAA support. This doesn't mean a more profitable AVP unfortunately.

As I'm sitting in my office about 600 yards from thousands of girls playing in AAU nationals in Orlando, it would seem like a no brainer.

Its because with one or two exceptions - tennis mostly - no one watches women pro sports. WNBA and women's soccer have both has massive promotion from dozens of top companies, Nike and the NBA for example poured millions into those sports and both have been failures. So far no one has really been able to figure out how to turn the thousands of girls and young women playing VB into fans of volleyball.

I don't know for sure but a lot of people have said that many sponsors from those arenas have felt burned by the AVP and beach volleyball generally in the past. For a marginal property like BVB that may be the kiss of death in many sponsors eyes

Howard/Quiggle vs Bree/Aurora should be a good match (would be a R2 battle), just getting around to looking at some of the (Qualifier) quadrants.
