"The AVP may have been down but all of Hannemann’s business ventures remained alive and successful. With that success came an abundance of fans, who loved not only Hannemann’s on-court energy – “I was a very emotional player.” – but his off-court availability. And now those fans were wondering: Could Hannemann resurrect the AVP Tour? Or, perhaps better: Could he found one of his own?"
So was it a mistake for him and his golden goose not to purchase the AVP in 2010 instead of starting a new league? Does anyone know why they did not do this, or why they thought it would be better to start a new league?
By the way, great article.

I love the idea of this but you have to do some elementary fact checking. Jason Ring was not "on his way up" in 2010. To start with he played his last event in 2009, second he had been getting worse for years before 2009 (his only win was in 2004) and in 2010, when he was supposedly an up and comer, he was 36 years old.

Jason Ring being on his way up was simply a quote from Casey Patterson..... Sure but that was put in without question and assumed true for the purposes of building a narrative. If you rely on a quote to establish a factual background, its good practice to make sure the person saying it isn't simply wrong. Far from the only error and most could have been prevented with greater sourcing

Great article - thanks for the link, and for some of the background info that some of us diehard fans may not have been aware of! By the way, are you OK, Guest2? I have never seen you being as negative as you have been in the past month or so - I hope that all is well with you and yours!

Good read tho Travis.

This is a terrific piece and I'm really looking forward to the book. Hopefully Travis will get the errors and typos cleaned up. It would also be great if he can get cooperation from all the key players in beach volleyball. I remember that the AVP in 2010 had such a bad reputation among players, sponsors, fans, etc., that it wasn't such a crazy idea to start a new tour with a new brand. Go back and read volley talk archives and listen to old TNL episodes. Nick Lewin was widely hated and Hans Stolfus was desperately trying to keep the AVP name relevant online. Nobody trusted anyone remotely associated with the AVP. I don't agree with everything Donald Sun has done with the AVP, but I don't think anyone could have predicted how well he has returned the AVP to legitimacy in just five years.

Appreciate the insight ajm. I really don't see how the NVL can survive, not with the top players signing 4 years exclusives with the AVP. Donald Sun knew there is not room for two leagues, so he wiped them out with the stroke of the pen. Even with Kerri Walsh, there is no way it will work. Good luck in 2018 is all I can say, who is going to play? It will be a sideshow that nobody cares about while the WSOBV is happening.

I disagree....I think Al comes back re-grouped next year with more powerful, knowledge personnel added to his team than he has had in the past and makes another go of it...The NVL is going big next year!

I love what Al B tried to do for the sport, what he did before Donald Sun came on the scene and the way the NVL always had great streaming and was fun to watch. That said Kerri Walsh has a 2 year injury, several of his top players are on the AVP, and great presentation simply isn't enough to make up for a field that is basically a good Florida event.
