What a freaking day, you guys (and girls) - holy crap!!! First of all, the set-up is again awesome - kudos to Donald and his crew for getting through a 65 team woman's quali and 105 men's team quali - I still don't know how they do that so seamlessly, but I guess the fact that there are 8 coming out of each side helps quite a bit in terms of how long it takes to winnow it all down to that number! Perfect day - again, I see why everyone moves out here if they can afford it - supposed to be 71 degrees and sunny for the next 3 days in a row, and it is very impressive to watch how these players deal with the wind, especially on the outer courts. Our backyard sand court is totally surrounded by trees so wind is almost never an issue, but I am still continually impressed by the ease with which many of these players adapt, even when considering the fact that a lot of them grew up playing out here.
CONGRATS, UNRATED! Not sure which one of them is your daughter, but they were both pumped and played great! Don't know much about either player, but the young blocker seems to have a future, and her setting of the short Orellana was really, really consistent and smart. I am guessing yours is the 25 year old blocker and not the 36 year old defender, but no matter which one is your kid, it has got to be an amazing feeling to see them get into the main draw at Manhattan Beach!
Pretty cool to see Jaden Whitmarsh at least win a match - sure wish Mike was around to watch that - watching her was cool and sad at the same time. I thought someone said Kerri is really close to her, but we did not see her anywhere?
Amanda Wiggins is one of Di's Volleychicks and we were lucky enough to spend some time with her in Huntington. Sadly she got worked by the #44 seed in their second match. Seems like bad passing and setting comes in streaks, and can come and go so quickly, game to game, but I was sad to see Amanda lose, because she is a really nice young lady.
Also surprised, once again, at how they nailed the seeding on the women's side. Would have been a perfect 1-8 seeds making it through if only #3 seed Pavan would not have messed that up. I guess Guest2's "best player in the world" objective statement is looking a bit more subjective. 4 AVP's this year and twice not even through to the main draw. Perfect example of someone who looks great while playing with an awesome partner, but has no ability to take a lesser defender and make her look and play better. Guess the incredibly weak AVP and horrible US women's teams can at least spank her whenever they want to - good thing she mostly plays overseas and thus has Humana- Paredes to carry her to some good FIVB finishes.
Lastly, Howard/Quiggle played great in Hermosa, so we wanted to watch them again. Even though they had a really easy path through the quali, they did not disappoint. Wonder if they could be one of the teams to watch at only 20 and 23? Seems like they compliment each other well, and Howard can get up and bang a ball - guess that's what notching 1000 kills at a place like Stanford will do for you!

Is there any way she is the type of player who merits a 3rd? Just because Pavan couldnt do it again doesn't mean it wasnt an accomplishment the first time To blame Sarah for this loss reflects your ignorance.

Really how does paven lose in the qualifier? Just last week people were talking how great she was and has had her best season in the fivb I think. She has took great teams to 3 And best most of the best teams in the world but can't make it out really amazes me.

Skylar may one day be a great player but right now she is one half of the number 3 team on her college team. Dig Magazine ranked Skylar and Dyer 41st. Thats in college. 41st. Part of the blame should also go to Sarah, she should probably be able to do this on her own, ala April when Kerri was hurt but thats a different skill set that doesn't have a ton of relevance to top competition, since its almost never something you need to do. I imagine Sarah also got frustrated and probably played poorly This doesn't mean she isn't a great player or that the AVP is particularly strong now it just further exposes one of her weaknesses, which is a minor one

It's a great 1 dimension, but like the other greats, if one aspect of their game isn't working they are able to do it another way. Does Sarah not jump serve? She should have a Phil/Evandro esk type serve with the angels she should get on it

Looking at the 1st round match ups, there are some chances for some lower seeded teams to pull upsets, of course one of them is Claes/Hughes. But I could also see 11 Hinga / Reeves vs 22 Howard / Quiggle going of the rails.

Pavan doesn't strike me as a player who can will her partner. She's a milquetoast personality in the court and needs to have consistency on her side so she dominate. Caputo played really well in their 3rd place finish. She was probably brought back down to earth and Pavan couldn't carry her.

For them to get to 3rd, especially with the two emphatic wins, I am sure she must have, but the two losses that I saw she was really bad. Thats not a knock she is a college player, but she seemed like she just didn't belong. I think you are right to a certain extent about Sarah's personality and I think she really benefits from Melissa's happy puppy type personality

Melissa is a really good consistent player. She isnt great by any means but she doesnt have to be. She allows Pavan to take over matches by allowing pavan to do what shes really good at. They fit each other really well.

Everyone, let's stick to the topic of the thread here... the Women's AVP MBO and the women that are currently still alive to play another day. Pavan lost, end of story here!

Some of these 1st round scores are going to be really bad...Green and Sherman score only 4 vs. Brooke and Summer in the 1st set.
