2017 beach volleyball season ended last week but a month from now, we have an event that counts towards 2018. worldtour.2017.fivb.com/en/wqin2017/women/teamsinfo/entriesbycountryOn the women's side, there are 9 USA women's teams. Not sure who's in reserve, and who has to play Qualifiers: April Ross/Kelly Claes Lauren Fendrick/Nicole Branagh Emily Day/Brittany Hochevar Kim DiCello/Emily Stockman Amanda Dowdy/Irene Pollock Summer Ross/Brooke Sweat Betsi Flint/Kelley Larsen Caitlin Ledoux/Kendra Vanzwieten Jace Pardon/Lara Dykstra Not much of a shakeup, but April Ross and Kelly Claes?? Seems like an experiment about to happen! Nicole and Lauren may be split blocking?.

Wonder if Sarah has accepted a call, or if they are going to "date others" for mentoring? Looks like a good fit for April long term , if they have the chemistry.

If April plays the right, they may almost be a favorite.

Hughes/Claes weren't going to China, but April decided to play. She called Hughes first, but Sara had a schedule conflict. So Claes was next on her list. I'm not sure I'd read any long-term ramifications into the pairings at this event - female or male - just yet.

One of the best reasons for a "King of the Beach" format was playing with with lots of possible partners. All with full approval of your current partner. Should be one late in every season!

I stumbled upon this Instagram post from Sara: http://instagram.com/p/BTQC3-DhjWU Her sister is getting married in the middle of the tournament. It's not a bad time to test waters of new partnerships since it's in October and they would have a few months to train for the rest of the 2018 season.

Seems like a pretty clear indicator that Lauren/April are no more. Great news. I'd rather see April lose more with a partner with potential than stay mediocre with Lauren

Sweat/Summer seeded 1st, April Ross/Kelly Claes seeded 2nd, and Lauren/Nicole seeded 4th in the main draw.
Then Em Day/Brittany, Emily Stockman/Kim DiCello, and Betsi Flint/Kelley Larsen all must play the country quota.

Only 4 USA teams are on the list now.
April and Kelly, Lauren and Nicole, and Brooke and Summer in main draw.
Brit and Em Day in qualification.

Ludwig/Walkenhorst have it listed on their personal website that they were going to play in this tournament. [Source]
It appears though that they are not. Perhaps they've won enough already this year!

A lot of the top teams are not playing in this one, for example Alison and Bruno or Phil and Nick. Even the Swiss and Canadian girls are not in this one.

I know I was hard on the team of Lauren & April during last season but it seems to me that maybe the plug was pulled on that partnership prematurely. A Silver at world champs. Who is April actually thinking about replacing Lauren with? It's safe to say that that it appears Sarah & Kelly are going to give it the old college try together as pros. Nicole has already firmly stated that she is going with Kerri when she comes back. Where does this leave Lauren?

Maybe April was not satisfied with just a silver this year, compared to previous years, she was winning gold medals. We still don’t know if she’s taking 2018 off yet— to start a family. She mentioned before that 2018 would be the ideal time to take off actually, no world champs and no Olympics qualification tournaments to meet.

I can tell you for a fact that April is not taking 2018 off to start a Family... 2018 it appears will be a testing the waters phase maybe for a lot of teams...A lot of questions will be answered by the beginning of the 2019 season... Examples: 1. Will Kerri heal well enough to be a serious threat with any partner to qualify for 2020? 2. Will Sara & Kelly have a good enough year on the FIVB in 2018 to feel like they contend for a 2020 Toyko podium? Or will they make a change in 2019? 3. Will April & Kerri join forces once again in 2019 to make another run like many feel may happen depending on KW's health? 4. Dark horse womens teams? Right now you would think the two teams going to Toyko for the women are Sara & Kelly and April & partner but things can change barring injury, etc... THE WORLD 🌎 is GOING TO BE CRAZY GOOD AT BEACH VB IN 2020!!! THE USA 🇺🇸 WILL NEED TO BRING THEIR BEST TO THE GAMES!!
