Game 3 of the Conegliano v. Novara final is today on ESPN3 at 11:00am (EST). Novara has had Conegliano's number of late, but Conegliano was able to pull out that 5-set victory in their most recent match. Hopefully that gives them some confidence. They destroyed Novara in set 2 of that match. I'm hoping for a Conegliano victory because I've come to really love watching Hill, Fabris, Bricio, and Wolosz play. At the end of the day it usually comes down to how dominant Egonu is, though.

Yikes, that knee injury in slow mo. Textbook example of the perils on landing on one foot versus two.

Yikes, that knee injury in slow mo. Textbook example of the perils on landing on one foot versus two. Oof, I know! She's been playing so well lately too. And right after De Kruijf had a knee injury, too! Melandri came in and picked up right where Folie left off though! Conegliano up 2-0, 19-16

Watching the replay: The final play of the first set—outstanding for Imoco Volley. Comes about 26' into the broadcast. Novara sends over a free ball and Imoco Volley does a clinic. Hill out left holds Egonu. Danesi runs a convincing slide route that holds the MB and gets Plak off her feet. Bricio running forward from the back row. Wolosz sets Fabris out on the pin and she hammers it. I don't know if volleyball can be poetic, but that would have been it. Great deception. The play was a thing of beauty.

My unofficial count is with Conegliano up 13-9 in the second set, 6 of Conegliano's kills this set are from back row attacks. 2 x Bricio, 3 x Fabris, 1 x Hill. Isn't this unusual, where a team scores so much from their players in the back row?

Isn't this unusual, where a team scores so much from their players in the back row? I haven't seen any other pro team use the back row so often and from so many different spots. Usually a team has 1 or 2 players that will come from the back row, but Conegliano uses all 3 pin hitters from lots of different spots back there. And it's so fast! I will say though that Vakifbank used a lot of backrow attacks in their match against Eczacibasi yesterday (whom they destroyed in 3 sets), but Naz wasn't starting. Cansu seems to run the offense slightly differently than Naz does.

Game 4 between Imoco Volley Conegliano and Igor Gorgonzola Novara will be streamed live at 9am Pacific tomorrow morning, Sunday, 29 April 2018. Conegliano is up 2-1 in the series and could close it out tomorrow. Raphaela Folie hurt her knee at the start of the second set of the last match. An Instagram Post for Raphaele Folie indicates it was serious and she has a long road ahead. Laura Melandri took over for her and shortly thereafter scored on a block and a service ace. Folie brought an infectious swagger to her play. I wish her well in recovery and hope Conegliano can adjust.

First set goes to Conegliano. 28-26. Novara playing better team ball today. Each team has been up. Each team has saved set points. Great battle.

Conegliano wins 3-1! Fabris had I think 4 aces in a row in set 4 which put them up 10 points, 21-11 or something like that. What a great match! Go Conegliano! I'm so looking forward to their matches against Vakifbank!

Congrats to Conegliano! Woloz did play VERY well, but so did Fabris. I thought it would go to Fabris, but Woloz is every bit as deserving. Bricio continued to play at a very high level. Watching that team a lot this season, you can really see the different between the outside hitters. Fabris and Bricio are both so good at making minor adjustments in their approach and swing to do more with a mediocre set. I wish I could say the same for Hill. She pretty much has one tempo.... and when it is out of that tempo, she might as well be 5'10". The good thing for Hill is that I think she passed quite well this season. I'm not sure ANYONE sees the block or the court as well as Fabris.

Wolosz was consistently excellent against Scandicci and Novara. She runs the offense that the US wants to run, and she does it at an incredibly high level. It’s fashionable to say/think that a back row-centric offense shouldn’t be run by women because they can’t score enough, so I love that Wolosz could do it so efficiently.
If Karch doesn’t add Hill’s back row attacking capabilities to the offensein a big way this summer, he’s making a mistake.

Missed the last set this morning so came back to watch Fabris take over Set 4 with five kills and four aces in a row (points 18–21). (Thank you ESPN streaming services). Unreal. Agree with VolleyTX about comments re: Fabris.
I like the choice of Wolosz as finals MVP. Serving, setting, blocking, defense—so well-rounded. Love how she distributes the ball. You don't know where the attack is coming (including my count of four successful kills from her today) from because there are so many reliable weapons.
Kim Hill picked up some real bombs today. She used to be a player you would target, but has developed so remarkably and obviously in her defense.
Can't say enough about the temperament of Imoco Volley. They had to save a set point in Set 1. Set 2 they were down most of the way, from 3-2 until they tied at 16. Put in a great effort during set 3, down from 2-1 for the rest of the match (with kudos to the coach for a well-timed double-sub near the end of the game that brought them from four points down to just one). And then Novara sort of collapsed as Fabris sort of uncorked in the last set. A lot of fun to watch this team. Wish they weren't down two middle-blockers heading to Bucharest this week, but Danesi and Melandri are playing well. Connection between Wolosz and Melandri improved as this match progressed.
