Two things. I strongly disagree with Brandonl10's assessment of past UNC liberos. Rayfield, Eskola, Gibson, Taner and Doyle(her senior year) all had exceptional careers with Eskola, Gibson and Taner all receiving All ACC and honorable mention All American honors. And, some scholarship money is given to liberos.

I am advocating for money to be geared towards building our back row. What I am saying is the back row defensive specialists do not compare to me to be on the same level as those from bigger programs and that is what sets them apart. There is more to a back row than a libero and that’s what I’m saying. We need to develop what we have into a good defensive team but also plan for the future. We are recruiting stud hitters but I don’t think it would hurt us to recruit some senior ace or highly recognizes defensive specialists. On a positive note, defense should be much improved this year

North Carolina just got a 2019 commit from Parker Austin, a 6 rotation outside hitter from Canada. She plays high level at Panda Club in Alberto and is on the Canadian Junior National Training Team.

UNC has 2 great committed liberos for 2019. A libero from A5 (2015, 2016, 2017 bronze at National Tournaments) and from Coast (2016 silver at Nationals) clubs. Both of them bringing a lot of experience and high level defensive skills.

The news on the libero commitments is fantastic.

With a very heavy heart, I can confirm unofficially that Taylor Leath is transferring.....can’t reveal source but it is legitimate. No idea where she’s headed but pretty sure PSU is a possibility. Tough loss. Wish her nothing but the best.
However, Scoles returning will help offset it as will a healthy Borup. I highly doubt now that Cox or Harrison are redshirted. One of both of them could get a starting position alongside Scoles on the left or Carlton on the right. Still a very talented and deep team but going to have to make up for Leath’s loss.

Sagula is having a heartbreak of a year. OR maybe a reset of a yupe of year depending on your level of positivity and no-obstacles sort of thinking.

I know Leath is leaving...confirmed it with multiple sources. Wants a fresh start for her last year after all that happened at UNC this past season. Plus it’s an opportunity to go to another school for fifth year although school hasn’t been announced. She is actually graduating so it’s really only a transfer in athletic eligibility.
I think based on what I have seen and heard UNC will look different this year....with the two new assistants the team seems like it will be more focused and very driven whereas the past styles have been relaxed and more go with the flow (not in a negative way at all). I have really liked what I have heard and seen. Leath leaving hurts, but there is a strong core of returning players and incoming recruits. As a Carolina fan, you have to hope Scoles has a breakout sophomore year like Leath and that either a current player of incoming one blooms like Scoles did as a freshmen. Talent and drive are there but Sagula has had a tough year. It will be interesting to see how the spring season goes with a new team leader or leaders being established. My bet is on Scoles and Carlton forming that duo and possibly Evans.

Are there more on the way out of CH? Nope, just Leath. Part of it I think is the rest of the team is s younger and strong core. Scoles, Borup, Carlton, Esterly, Evans, Moseman are all very close personally and have great chemistry on the court. They are not going anywhere. I don’t think there’s a concern for exodus. It was a personal choice based on her preference and was not because of the coaching changes. All recruits are still solid as well.

I wish Taylor Leath well. She was a great player, hard worker, and a very positive presence at UNC. I hope her departure turns out to be a great opportunity for one of the younger UNC hitters.

Leath announced she was leaving before she knew about Eve.

Leath announced she was leaving before she knew about Eve. Yep.i just hadn’t had it confirmed. It wasn’t anything against the new coaches. EspnW wrote an article last year about her days as a ball girl at Penn State and how she didn’t want to go there and chose UNC because she didn’t just want to be a plug in player. I guess now her careee can come full circle. She will be missed. I’m fully expecting a Scoles and Borup duo but I don’t count out Cox or Harrison exploding onto the scene either

Expect some surprise transfers. Do you have an insight or heard any specifics?
