Harrison is a star. In 2016 her A5 team won both Nationals (AAU and USAV) and she was an integral part of that team. This is the biggest understatement I’ve seen on VT today. Harrison>>>Integral. That team still has many talented pieces but they are nowhere near as successful after she left the club. She’s a well rounded kid that doesn’t live for volleyball from what I hear. She’ll be good and a great teammate. If UNC ignites her passion to be great she will be! She has all the tools!

Watched a little bit of practice last week and I am very impressed with the team even without Leath. The biggest take away I saw was the first contact is much improved. Having a healthy squad and consistency in the back row has really helped them work on the offense as well.
Notes:
OH (Outlook: Slightly Better): Scoles is back and looks every bit of dominant as she was as a Freshmen. Her back row contribution is already helping with passing and serve receive. She looks even stronger this year. Borup is training to take over the other 6 rotation OH position. Her offense is thunderous as ever but her back row skills look to be improving and her back row attacking is very strong. Laufenburg Has played some on the LS and is recovering well from her injury. LaGarde is playing on the LS and RS. She is further along than I gave her credit for. Mainly on the front row, she is really good at OOS swings.
MH (Outlook: Improved Offense, Similar Blocking): Esterly, already a great blocker, is working more on her offense. She is hitting some on the slide now which also is speaking as to what Sagula may try setting wise. Raleigh Clark is impressive. She is very much like Esterly blocking. She has good footwork and is very long and quick. Her offense is also very good. She is mainly focuing on 1's and not as much on the slide. Fields is back practicing as well. Fields is splitting time between MH and RS. Fields seems to be making better connections in the middle with her setters and her offense there seems to be more consistent. I am most impressed with Ava Bell. Offensively, to be a Freshmen, she is very skilled. Good mix of hitting 1's and slides, and also swings on the pin when the setter is front row. Her blocking is very skilled as she is disciplined and has good timing. Blocking is once again going to be a UNC strength but the middle offense re-surging with two offensive middles may be more helpful this year.
RS (Outlook: More Balance): The RS is the area UNC had to explore last year and I think there may be some answers. Laufenburg seems very comfortable there but I am very impressed with Fields. She is absolutely roofing hitters in the LS and her offense there is just as thunderous as in the middle. she is capable of hitting sharp cross all the way to line from the RS. Carlton is swinging there some for a few rotations and the big notice for me is that instead of the left hander going sharp cross, she is mixing up her off speed and line shots more. Between those three and incoming recruits, Sagula should have more options there.
Setting (Outlook: Better Connections): Sagula looks like he is finally gearing up to run the system he was aiming last year. Carlton is setting around in a modified 5-1/6-2. Carlton has been setting for all 6 rotations for at least one full cycle and mixing in Fields/Laufenburg/LaGarde at RS. Bell has even taken swings on the RS and been effective. However, Carlton has really grown in attacking the ball on second contact. It is more disguised and hard driven than the paint brush swipes she attempted last year. Koetter is then coming in on the back row to set some and her connection seems more stable. There are still some missed timing with the MH. Evans has practiced some as well but she is easing back more slowly it seems.
Defensive Specialists (Outlook: Cleaner, More Consistent): As stated, Scoles is already adding to the defensive core as a 6 rotation OH. I believe Borup will be more than capable by the fall. However, Fradenburg is back and her passing is spot on. She may get some stiff competition for the libero spot, however. We saw at the end of last year Moseman and Hough becoming more involved. Moseman seems to be developing into a leader on the court and her court awareness is improved. Hough is special. There are hits that she is digging that make you wonder why she did not get more playing time. Do not count out Hull either. Hull is very demanding on the court and I am more impressed with her serve receive growth. Jacobs was very streaky at times last year. However, her serve receive looks cleaner as well. She still needs to work on playing off the block better.
Incoming Recruits: Sagula has some tough decisions to make. As mentioned above, Harrison is very special. My initial thoughts was that he would Red Shirt her with Leath to learn under. However, I do not know if that is going to happen. She may be what UNC needs on the RS to make a more complete team. Cox is another question mark. She can play both pins very well but is stronger on the LS. Can she beat out Borup for the second spot or will she be the one red shirted?
Take Aways: UNC should be much more balanced offensively this year than last season. Sagula has multiple options at every position and there are two UAA coming in. Defensively, first and second contact look much cleaner and more consistent to lead to better offense and opportunities in transition and OOS kills. The setting connections is maturing between Carlton and her hitters. Sagula has also urged his team to focus more on serving tougher (As every coach should). Schall and Clemens look to blend very well with the team. The team chemistry itself is better because of more consistent players being on the floor. I truly believe that although last season was tough, this team has grown from so many people getting to play last year and get experience. It looks very much like the two potential captains will be Scoles and Carlton. Do not see a spring schedule yet but hopefully we will see some potential line ups.

There has been a good amount of communication with people close to the program that Mariah Evans is actually medically retiring because of hip issues she has been battling with for years. Sehrena Hull already quit the team. And although it would be great to see Scoles and Fields stay at UNC it doesn't look like that is happening. Scoles has a passion for beach and would like to pursue that and Fields has battled medically and only returned a couple weeks ago but still doesn't feel the fit in the program anymore. Not saying these are 100% but as I earlier predicted Leath's departure I have some good Intel and it could all be true.

You are correct Hull is gone. I haven’t heard why though. This was a recent happening. Evans has not practiced a lot and has indeed considered the medical aspect of her condition. There is a possibility of her retiring, I have heard that. I don’t see Scoles leaving.
Also, here is the spring schedule:
If you didn’t know, the heels are also going to Europe this summer.

Will be interesting to see how the Heels do this weekend as they take on competition for the first time since the horrendous fall. We will also see who fills holes in the line up with Leath, Fricano, and Nordhorn moving on. In practice they look really good, but game against other comp is more telling.

As stated early in this thread the news out of Chapel Hill this week confirms Julia Scoles will be leaving UNC to pursue other options. Unfortunately, I heard this as well yesterday that she is potentially looking at schools on the west coast, but i had not heard an official statement that she has said specifically that she is leaving yet. She enrolled at UNC early and knew it was not a beach school. She also garnered plenty of accolades her freshmen year. Although Eve and Adams left, Schall is a good get for UNC and Clements will help to. I won't fully believe it until spring scrimmages tomorrow, to see if she is playing or not.

OUch! Somehow, three years of Leath and Scoles on the left side turned into 1. It's certainly frustrating, but I wish her well wherever she winds up. I'm hoping to check out some of the matches tomorrow at Duke. If she's not there or not playing, I assume that would make it pretty much for sure. I do think, it's better to know earlier rather than later. Last season, not knowing who would be playing and where any given week made things a lot harder, particularly with two first year setters, a backrow with limited experience, etc. Whatever development time there is going forward needs to go to the players who will actually be there in the fall.

No reference to UNC on her Instagram at this point.
Any chance ‘SC scoops her up for beach?

She actually never had UNC on her Instagram or Twitter. And I’m not believing it fully until tomorrow spring scrimmages to be sure. It would shock me if she left honestly.

No reference to UNC on her Instagram at this point. Any chance ‘SC scoops her up for beach? No available scholarship money. If she wants to play beach, she’d probably be best off at a school with an indoor schollie available that will allow her to play both: UCLA, Cal Poly, Hawaii, Cal, etc.
