Julye won't be competing with Schwan, Scambray, and Bajema for a starting role, but a couple frosh and, maybe, a soph. That said, she'll need to pass, at least for three rotations. She did have an even better beach season than the year before - hopefully, if given the chance to pass, she will. Her blocking will never be a strong-point. We'll see, in other words... The way I see it, if Cook wants to advance in the tourney he will need the taller players to match up with other top tourney team's height. The only way to do so is to get the Crenshaws, Cole, Dreshel and etc reps early on. Year in and year out Scambray and Schwan got lost amongst the trees, ie the big 10 teams (Illinois beat us with a couple of taller frosh). He would be a fool to think Julye is the long term answer. 6'2" plus across the front line is a minimum requirement to move past sweet 16 anymore.

All 4 FF teams last year started OHs that were 6'1 or shorter (Snyder 6'1, Frantti 6'1, Lee 6'1, McClure 6'0, Albrecht 6'0). Agree that physical players tend to have an advantage, but saying that you have to be this tall to succeed is a bit of a stretch. If Julye really has improved and elevated her game to the point where she can contribute in the front row then she will be on court regardless of her height.

Of course tall is good, but the same players feasted on some much taller lineups. Arizona, for instance, never seemed to give them any trouble. I think Illinois just got aggressive and grabbed the attacking momentum away from the Huskies halfway through the fourth set, then never let up.
It also didn't help that the Huskies never really seemed to have quite gelled as a team last year. It should have been simple -- they had graduated only one player from the year before. But the Great Libero Experiment and then a series of injuries left them still looking for a team identity by the time the tournament started, and that's a bad place to be.

If Julye really has improved and elevated her game to the point where she can contribute in the front row then she will be on court regardless of her height. Psychologically looking at a wall that averages 6'2" or higher drains a team and forces them to hit incredible shots, or at least puts the pressure on to try and do so. McClure had 6'6", 6'8", 6'2" and 6'6" support around her. Snyder had 6'4", 6'8", 6'4" and 6'2" around her. Albrecht had 6'3", 6'4", 6'1" and 6'3" around her. And in themselves these 3 didn't have steller numbers down the stretch. Even PSU had 6'3"ish players to carry the team and Lee is one of those rare players like Rivers that has serious bounce. It seems the minimum requirement to make a deep run anymore is to be able to form a formidable wall. MSU, Illinois, Stanford, NE, Florida, PSU and etc all seem to have been able to form walls of 6'2" or better. I think UW has to develop Dreshel and Crenshaw to complement Bajema and Sanders so they too can put an intimidating wall together come tourney time. I like Juyle's arm as much as the next guy but I don't think she offers an intimidating presence or elevated enough shot to beat the better teams. Also, the difference between a 6'1" player and a 5'11" player is more than 2 inches when you consider wing span.

Well, if I'm ever a teenage girl in Florida, I'll keep that in mind.

Indeed. Its fun to speculate. And knowing Cook one can only speculate. He's disappointed me on more than one occasion.

Sanders is good, but a frosh setter and new passers aren’t likely to help her offensive numbers and new pin blockers aren’t likely to help her blocking stats.

Sanders is good, but a frosh setter and new passers aren’t likely to help her offensive numbers and new pin blockers aren’t likely to help her blocking stats. Granted, it'll be a work in progress. For blocking, depends on who Sanders is playing next to: Bajema is an excellent blocker, Drechsel is 6'4". On the passing, I'm hoping McPherson can pull an Orlandini...

Bajema is an excellent blocker? Ok.... tell that to the Illinois team that wrecked her. She was a solid lateral blocker closing to her right as a middle. She also benefited from having one of the strongest RS blockers, Jones, and blocking setters, Tanner, in the conference. That’s markedly different than what’s being asked for her setting the blocks to her left. There was little she’s shown during her staring LS appearance that she is an “excellent” pin blocker.

As someone who defended McPherson for the last two years (and also someone who defended Olandini her first two years) -- I think McPherson is not as good as JO. Not a bad libero, though. Still think she should have been libero last year and Tia kept on the front line.
