Will Krista Vansant be the new Asst. Coach? A great player (and person) doesn't necessarily make a good coach. Her only coaching experience so far is in club. That's quite a leap to a top D1 program. However, Courtney Thompson ...

*cough* Rubright....though I don't think we offered her. I also wouldn't have minded having Zimmerman (S) ....though a walk-on setter the caliber of Robinson isn't anything to sneeze at...or Reghan Pukis (OH) on the roster........I'd feel MUCH better about our back row if Van Sickle was on the roster. Anyone know if Avi Vetter grew some this past year? Or Jemma Yeadon. Yeadon was already locked up with JMac and left with him, Cook didn't have a prayer. Vancouver is basically part of Portland and Vancouver has always been a steady stream of athletes to Oregon (1/2 the working parents from Vancouver commute to Portland for work). Outside of those two big fish from big 5 conferences Cook has kept all others such as Sanders, Bajema, Niece, McPearson and now Drechsel here. All "big fish" that he targeted and all possible starters for next year.

She apparently has NO indoor eligibility left, but Cat McCoy of UT is transferring to UW to play one season of beach. (I admit, I have no idea how those eligibility rules work.)
But, here's my question. Will her position with UW beach possibly help in the training/coaching for whoever ends up being UW's libero in '18?

Players have 5 years to play 4 seasons. They can play multiple sports. So, if she played indoor in ‘14-‘17, and graduates in ‘18, she can use that 5th year as a grad transfer to play another sport.

Relatively simple, actually. Players have five years to play from the time they start playing NCAA athletics. In each sport they have four years. Sand and Indoor are considered different sports, so if you play indoor one or more years without playing sand, and you don't redshirt, then when you are done playing indoor after four years you will still have another year to play sand. It's further complicated because Sand is a spring sport. If McCoy has already transferred, she could actually be playing Sand for the UW this spring as well as next spring. Remember when Summer Ross played indoor for UW in the fall and then transferred to Pepperdine and played outdoor that same spring?

Congrats to Winder! Big recruiter loss but hopefully we can find someone young and dynamic! The real immediate impact is to the beach program... it’s starting pretty soon and winder led that charge.

Whether JMac, who had a penchant for smaller OHs, would have offered her for UW remains an open question. She could have ended up at WSU, it seems to me.

She'll almost certainly be playing Beach in 2018-19. Same timeline as Anderson and Gardiner, who are in the same grad program, just a year later.

UW's assistant coaching position has been a stepping stone to a D1 head coaching position (Gandara/Miami, Cook/UW, and Winder/Fresno State). Gabriel is reputed to have turned down head coaching offers, including possibly at UW. This is a prime position that includes head coaching responsibilities for the Beach team (unless they split the hire). While Thompson could take over Winder's responsibility for coaching the setters, she has no beach playing/coaching experience. While both Vansant and Thompson have a lot to offer, neither have coaching pedigrees that qualify them for this position, it seems to me - either would be a good hire as a volunteer/graduate assistant.

I forget. Where did Gabriel assist before UW? She had to be a premiere assistant somewhere before UW right. No way they would hire her without some good coaching pedigrees.
