In a paper courts interview (Travis Meriwether’s earlier podcast) with Adam Johnson, Adam mentioned the women’s performance on the big court (evidently, it was not “up to par” or something like that). Assume many Volleytalkers saw some of the women’s games during that era (I couldn’t find anything on YouTube). Was their play distinguishable from the women of today? I guess my assumption is that the men could rally up to the court dimensions, but maybe the women had more of a problem and thus the parity of play between men and women was a bit more obvious.

It definitely was a different game for women, especially beyond the top 2-3 teams. I hate short court for men but for the women's game I think it was a great change. Take a look at this: I was a big Elaine Roque fan, but today I'm not sure she would ever compete in a full field event. Same for everyone on that court in either game other than Linda Hanley At the same time short court came in, a new generation of huge athletic women came to the beach. EY and Kerri were just beyond anything we had seen. Nancy Reno was the best net player and when she played with EY (admittedly Nancy was older then) Reno looked like a defender. Some of the women back then would still be great (Silva, Kirby, Liz) but others like Linda Carillo, Cammie, Rock, Janice, even Holly, would really struggle to have the same kind of impact today, especially internationally

There are other WPVA videos on YouTube. I keep thinking I should pull out my old VHS tapes and digitize them. But I don't know when I will find the time.

If you send them to the guy who runs the Old School Volley Facebook page he will digitize and post them for you. I'd love to see more WPVA. Kirby v Masakayan and then the two of them very briefly playing Holly/Nancy post injury was some of my favorite vb
