ive watched them play, and they are not bad. dont understand all the hate
yes their players are puerto rican, but they are skilled.
it might be in the middle of nowhere, but the team plays in a ncaa tourney bid conference, give them some life.

2 personal friends of mine that were an OH, and MB starting there absolutely hated it. One of their quotes they said to me "The coach promises you the world when you visit, but when your enroll hes a complete ass and practices do not mean anything to him, as well as the school is a joke and do not expect a degree from their to mean anything." Also "They do not let you do anything, even when you have free weekends to study and relax they make you travel to Clemson to "Volunteer" as a parking attendant for the football games, and also the Carolina Panthers games as parking attendants. So if either or both have a home game expect to not be at Campus for the entire day. MB is now starting MB at Queens, and the other is starting OH at LMU.

Quincy does the same thing, making their guys work as parking attendants at Iowa games

I think the biggest thing is that OBVIOUSLY the kids are promised things that don't come through when the arrive on campus. Boys Volleyball is a relatively small community to recruit from, and when a small school has crazy Victorian-era rules for behavior and a "Christ Centered" education the recruiting pool is EVEN SMALLER. Crazy Religious schools are not going to work well for MOST kids in the 21st century, unless they are hooked in to the Mormon's such as BYU or SVU. Erskine will always hook kids that don't know any better and then they will transfer when they realize how backward the school's beliefs are. Same things have happened at Sacred Heart, Greenville (D3), Holy Names, and Emmanuel (GA), among others.
Maybe if NCAA Volleyball was being played in the 1800's they would be more appealing...

From reading the commments above from people who seem to know about the program, the issue is likely the coaching and the way that the program is run, and possibly the school's location. Blaming the struggles on the "religious" issue ignores the fact that GCU and Concordia (Irvine) are doing great things with their programs. Take a look at Concordia's "What We Believe" page and you will see that they hold very traditional Christian positiions.
Hopefully Erskine can turn this around.

Religious schools often do really well with sports recruiting because parents are often concerned about what they see as a permissive or destructive college social environment. Pepperdine is religious and relatively small. Being in Malibu is a perk, but I don't think it drives most choices for recruits. Concordia is in a similar boat. GCU is right next to ASU, which is considered a huge party school, but still attracts great players from within the state. BYU is religious and built around a behavioral code. It's about getting the right people. BYU had Carl Mcgown to lift them up. A little support from the school and a great coach and they can!

Religious schools may do well with "Sports" recruiting because of the sheer numbers of participants in the major sports. However, boys volleyball is not nation-wide, so the pool of qualified candidates is MUCH lower than other sports. The point is that when you pigeonhole your institution into finding certain students who adhere to strict conservative values, the recruiting pool gets MUCH smaller. With so many emerging programs its going to be hard to find enough kids that fit...especially when beautiful West Coast schools will get first pick (Hard to compare Pepperdine, CU-Irvine, GCU, and BYU to other small religiously-based institutions in small town USA), a place like Erskine (Due West, South Carolina- population 1,200) or other similar institutions will find it difficult to compete over the long haul...
