After a 10 day layoff, UH plays UCLA at 7am HT and LMU at 10 am HT. There does not seem to be any links to watch or live stats. Hall is sticking with same line up from 2 weeks ago. Muno and Simo take first set on court 5 v Zalopany and Dreeuws 21-9. Homayun and Ozee lose 21-19 set 1 to Carey and Muret. UCLA takes first point with a 21-9, 21-15 win at court 5 over Zalopany and Dreeuws. At CRT.4 UH Homayun and Ozee also lose in straight sets 21-19, 21-18. UCLA up 2-0 on UH. Maglio and Schucht lost in straight sets. Kan and Weaver lost in 3. UCLA up 4-0 and for some reason they haven't reported on CRT. 3 at all on twitter. Hall needs to make adjustments but will he? His precedence has been not to. The number 5's in particular are not performing well. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the ability to mix up pairings on a match per match basis. I'm wondering why they messed with some pretty good pairings from last year: Maglio-Weaver, Kan-Homayun, Zalopany-Ozee. Could have plugged Schucht into Tucker's spot and pair her with Martin and still have 4 strong pairs, with experience playing with each other. Or could have gone with Martin-Monkhouse as they have, and move Schucht to play with Fitterer if looking to pair her with a "big". Hopefully, it's just a matter of (a little) time for the new Kan-Weaver, Homayun-Ozee and Zalopany-Dreeuws pairs to get up to speed with consistency.

I think he could have stuck with some pairings from last year. Some of the best pairs in the country right now are pairs that have been together for at least one season. Of course, it's always a challenge trying to make the 5 top pairs and improve on from last year. Hall did make an adjustment in the LMU match where he inserted Huddleston and Fitterer into the match and they won at 5. It puts pressure on the other pairings knowing that if you aren't performing, you might get bumped. I'd like this team to be able to insert individual players into a match and not just pair combos. Anna Collier from USC has been criticized a bit for doing this, but I think it will pay off for USC eventually. I didn't mind some of the original pairings he had before things were switched up a week and a half before the start of the season - Martin and Weaver, Kan and Monkhouse, Zalopany and Fitterer. Homayun and Ozee are one of the longest partnerships that were established this year. I'm not sure what is going on there. I would expect them to be doing better at the #4 flight. Ozee has lots of energy but maybe the combo with Homayun just isn't strong enough. I think Ozee was better with Zalopany last year. Schucht had a pre-season injury and she doesn't look to be as sharp as last year (yet) and she's used to a right side "big" (Taylor). Maglio and Homayun did well in pre-season apparently and beat everyone. I thought they might be together? Kan and Weaver are doing okay, but I don't know how they will match up against the more physical teams. They do well against smaller, athletic pairs. IMO Martin and Monkhouse should improve a lot. As good as everyone thinks Monkhouse is, she is still adjusting to the college level and makes "freshman" mistakes. I could see all three of our top 3 flights move around between # 1-3 depending on the matchup. SaveSave

Some is just speculation on my part; it's just discussion. I have watched the opening matches and talked to players. But no, I am not there all the time so I don't presume to know everything that goes on. I have been watching online and following along with a lot of the teams. I am a little worried about some of the matchups. I see other teams making adjustments and I hope we are too. I hope it's just time and the partnerships come around (or changes be made). The partnerships are relatively new compared to some teams, so you never know! When I said I liked the previous pairs that Hall gave publicly to Cindy Luis on her blog, I meant I liked them on paper. I thought all the flights were fairly even. I liked the distribution of height and experience etc. But, for whatever reason, they were changed. SaveSave

I know last season he made almost no changes. And as much as winning is great, getting playing time for players who work hard should also be a priority. With the talent that Hawaii has, he should be able to move a few players in and out of the lineups.

I know that all matchups are different, but just to give some idea of comparison to Cal Poly (TCU only common opponent thus far), here are their scores against TCU.
Cal Poly 4 TCU 1 (March 3, 2018)
1 CP Torrey Van Winden/Tia Miric def. Cassie House/ Haven Hill 21-12, 21-19 2 CP Emily Sonny/Sam Manley def. Jillian Bergeson/Jaelyn Greene 23-21, 21-18 3 CP Adlee Van Winden/Taylor Nelson def. Molly Scheel/Hannah Rogers) 21-15, 21-13 4 TCU Jensyn Bledsoe/Avery Arellano def. Raeann Greisen/Hannah Hubbard 22-20, 10-21, 15-13 5 CP Heather Pembroke/Macy Gordon def. Claire Doyle/Jordan Terral 21-19, 14-21, 15-9
March 10, 2018
#3 Hawai'i 5, #20 TCU 0
1: Weaver/Kan def. Bergeson/Greene, 21-17, 21-13 2: Maglio/Schucht def. House/Hill, 21-16, 22-20 3: Monkhouse/Martin def. Scheel/Rogers, 21-9, 21-9 4: Ozee/Homayun def. Arellano/Bledsoe 21-15, 21-10 5: Zalopany/Dreeuws def. Doyle/Westendorff 21-18, 21-8
TCU switched up their number 1 and 2 flights.*
Interestingly, TCU has switched their 1-3 pairs. Looks like House and Hill are the usual #1 pair, with Bergeson/Greene at #2 (but moved to #3 for their lone point against ASU - March. 4th).
I think we will see more teams strategizing this way. IMO

A little more fair turn-around for UH and USC tomorrow with 2 matches in between their matches (versus one match today). UCLA and Pepp. still with the advantage of a 3 match cushion between their matches (better than today's set up where UCLA and Pepp. each had 5 matches between their matches).

After their 10 day layoff (from competitive play), I believe team took the red-eye out to LA on Tuesday night, then played early (7:00 am HT) on Thursday. Also heard Schucht was not at 100%. Think she was doing better today. Hopefully, she and the team get back into their groove tomorrow.
Next up:
UH vs. FIU 6:00 am HT UH vs. LSU 9:00 am HT
#9 LSU could be a tough test. They knocked off #1 USC today.

Sunday, Mar. 11, 2018
No. 3 Hawai’i def. No. 13 FIU, 3-2
1. Federica Frasca/Margherita Bianchin (FIU) def. Laurel Weaver/Carly Kan (UH), 21-17, 21-13 2. Ka’iwi Schucht/Emily Maglio (UH) def. Anabela Sataric/Madison Besterfield (FIU), 21-4, 21-13 3. Morgan Martin/Lea Monkhouse (UH) def. Lina Bernier/Dorina Klinger (FIU), 22-20, 21-12 4. Amy Ozee/Ari Homayun (UH) def. Estefanie Bethancourt/Natalia Giron (FIU), 21-9, 21-11 5. Mariana Dal Pozzo/Taija Thomas (FIU) def. Hannah Zalopany/Paige Dreeuws (UH), 21-18, 21-19
Looks like FIU moved their usual #2 flight to #3 to try and get a win (but apparently didn't realize we have a strong #3 team - kind of deflated them to lose the first set at #3).
