Four of them. She and Britt won half the AVPs they played last year, same as Phil. Of the AVP blockers I think she is probably third best behind Alix and Summer. Do you count Pavan? Unless she is playing in a qualifier, Sarah is in a different league from any blocker playing on the AVP.

So she said she’s looking for a partner for Seattle, which is next week. Lauren is supposed to be playing FIVB with Lane. Who’s the best partner Sponcil could get? If I were Emily Day and Sarah would commit to all the AVPs and a few FIVBs I would give Betsi her walking papers. I expect Britt to end the season back with Day. Sarah said something about checking with Lauren after Seattle, but other than that EmDay seems like a good call.

Good point I forgot her. I'd say Brandi is slightly better than Day right now. She has had some very good international results this year, although she and Nicole did get beat twice by Day/Britt last year

I mean come on. That’s objectively a bad decision. She’s 21. Take advantage of the prestigious UCLA degree and elite coaching. Don't bail to maybe make 10k this year... I think that would really depend on her goal and what she could get in terms of partnership. If she is committed to being a pro beach player, and if she could get a solid commitment to a full year from Fendrick (which is basically a hypothetical now since Lauren is hurt), she can get the degree later and likely wouldn't be using it for 10 years or so anyway. I think staying in school really hurt Claes/Hughes as players, or at least delayed it. With young players the sooner you get them playing at the top level the better, I think that has been shown to be true pretty consistently around the world and in many sports. Maybe she can get all that experience this Summer by playing a lot and practicing with top teams etc. so I could definitely be wrong, but practicing with and playing against lesser players has limited value at Sarah's level It consistently works in sports that have real structure (coaching, teams, finances, etc..) While beach may be getting there, is definitely not at the point that there is this great structure of training US national team athletes (although it sounds like Tyler may be changing that). In this case, I think it really comes down to money. Scholarship + Coaching and Benefits of being on college team vs. the prize-money she can win?

You left out practicing and playing against top level players rather than mostly teenagers who will never play professionally, although your point vis a vis organization is a good one

I wish she would drop out of school and go full time FIVB right now as well along with all the AVP's. I mean come on. That’s objectively a bad decision. She’s 21. Take advantage of the prestigious UCLA degree and elite coaching. Don't bail to maybe make 10k this year... Yea bad wording on my part. I just meant I would like to see her full time on both tours right now.

Look. 1 more year of good training with professional coaches for free and obtaining a degree outweighs the unarguable but relatively minor benefit of playing against current AVP pros. If she really wants to she can use her connections to set up friendlies. Her starting her AVP career (if that’s what she chooses to do versus indoor) at 22 is more than fine.

Sarah said something about checking with Lauren after Seattle, but other than that EmDay seems like a good call. Sarah Sponcil would probably do well with Em Day rather than Em Day with Betsi Flint. Sponcil is a great setter but gets the benefit of the doubt in the US on her sets. Some would not fly with FIVB refs. Up to now she also comes up just a little short in 3rd set attack stamina against good blockers (in international U-competitions and NCAA).

So you think as an indoor setter she would have a hard time speeding her hands up for FIVB???
