It’s good to have a a variety of shots but if you become a dominant “1” hitter, you will cause all kind headache for your opponents. The men’s game doesn’t have the slide so it’s not really all that vital but it’s definitely good to have in your arsenal. I agree that it's not vital. Alade is Stanford's #1 middle, a HM AA last season, and a potential 1st or 2nd team AA this season so she gets by, even without the slide. ;-) But it helps spread the defense when the setter's in the front (assuming a 5-1) which is pretty important if you don't want your opponents to camp on your OH every time you're a bit out of system (which is pretty often for most teams facing a good opponent). If your team can pass well enough so that you're mostly in-system no matter the opponent, it's less important. Then you can run your quick sets to either the middle or outside.

She's not that close in total blocks bc she missed some time with an injury and bc they sometimes play Bowen (for either Alade or Campbell) when they play against easier opponents.

Westerberg looks to have a heavy arm, probably harder than Maglio or Mitchem had in the middle. She definitely brings Heather Bown heat....

Tiffany Westerberg looks impressive! I love this highlight video of her. She can hit the slide with a lot of authority. She can hit in front of the setter too, and on the rightside.

I think the thread has some clips of Akana, Hellvig, and Wagoner in it. They also have other videos of Westerberg, but I am not sure if there are any on Igiede, as videos of her seem scarce and outdated.

The only videos of Igiede are from her Junior year, mostly. There is only one so far of her Senior year, a very, very short one. See Brooselee's entry on page 9. Looks like she has lost some baby fat, in that one, more fit.

But you still can't tell how good Igiede will be based on the video. Hitting over short players who can't jump tells you nothing about how well a player will do in college where they aren't going to be in that situation. Some adapt well. Others don't.

That video I posted was not of her HS but her Red Storm Club team. She was playing against another club team so it’s a more “”real “ look at what she can do. Cannot help it if the people there in Baton Rouge does not make videos for their prospects. I think what you can see is the power on her hit. She also have shown in other videos that she have a cut shot so she does have a variety of shots. That is why I asked the question of whether Amber is someone Robyn is looking for down the line. Others think she can help right away but I think she is at least a year away.

Also, if Akana can make the jump from High School to College Volleyball. If Skye Williams improves, then it will come down to, can Akana make that jump, and start at OPP. If that is the case then Westerberg will be the other starting Middle, and Amber will be the backup Middle. But if Williams does not improve, we could see Amber starting in the Middle, or another scenario, if Akana is not able to make the transition from High School, to College Volleyball, we could see Westerberg play OPP, allowing Amber to start at the Middle position. So to reiterate, the only way I see Amber not starting is if Williams does improve, and Akana being able to make the jump from High School, to College Volleyball.

By the way, Brooselee, how did you find that video of Amber, anyway. You people are really good at finding video of players, I must say.

I appreciate it when ppl post what they find. Thanks for posting it. I agree with you that she may not be able to help much next season but I can't really tell bc we have no video of her playing against top high school competition (which is still easier than BWC competition but at least makes it easier to guess). Maybe she'll adapt quickly. I hope so. I'm not going to count on it until I see her play against college players, though. She has potential so that's a good first step.

I now know I am not doing enough investigating. Thank you, by the way, for doing so much investigating.
