Diggin' Water makes much nicer threads. I will fix this one when I have time (at work now) or will delete this one if Diggin wants to create this match thread. You're young enough to be at work? I envy you! GO HUSKERS

I think this match is hard to predict bc, as noted in the main Hawaii thread, Portland has done very well this preseason (8-0) but the only good(ish) team that they've played has been Wyoming. That went to five sets with one of them being a blowout for Wyoming and one for Portland. The other three sets were pretty close. It should probably be a good match but it's hard to know what to expect until play starts.

baytree: I do a lot of banter, here; didn't start out that way, ~ two years now, but, When In Rome....You have some decent, interesting points, so I will put my VT smart-ass persona to the side and answer them sincerely (for both you and the greater UH-UP audience). 1) As to the seeming appearances of UP's wins, they (UP fans) Could VERY WELL bring up UH's two wins against Coastal Carolina (plus Idaho, even) and similarly ask, "Who?" 2) 8-0 (UH statistics site showed 7-0: I will go with you), even against Rats Ass U., is WAY MORE impressive than 3-2! 3) These UH threads Were SO Full Of gloom-&-doom before the past three matches; perhaps one may not be so tempted to "go overboard" as much if one views Kansas State's level vs. CC's or UI's. 4) As somebody formerly VERY invested in this sport, previously, I have a different 'take' than most; I even view the BW, UH and most other teams differently than most non-players/ non-coaches. 5) THAT being said, I just enjoy great VB: wherever and whenever it is played. My home conferences are the Pac-12 (where I am a grad-alum of their most famous vb school), and, ironically, the BWC: where my D3 alma mater (where I played) ended up: after becoming DI. So, I view all of this stuff through a different "lens", so to speak; but you have a passion for being a fan which I can appreciate (I grew up in a family that HATED one of my alma maters (my parents were both UCBerkeley students); MY Deeper drive-passion is for UC Davis. So here I am!

I"d be one of the ppl pointing out that you can't tell much about Hawaii based on their wins so far. That was part of my point about the match. I'm glad that Hawaii beat Coastal Carolina and Idaho but I don't think that tells you much about how they'll do against Oregon or Cal Poly. (I'm not sure what to think of Oregon yet, either. We'll probably know more after they've played Minnesota and Penn State this weekend.) Quite a few ppl seemed to agree that CC wasn't a good team and so took those wins with a grain of salt. You can enjoy a win (or improvement or the team gelling) without thinking that you're world beaters.
I agree about the earlier doom and gloom but that tide seems to have turned. I haven't seen that much blind faith in the team right now either, though. I think most fans are cautiously optimistic, which is probably a good approach. Other fans seem somewhat pessimistic but also somewhat hopeful for progress this season or in future years. That makes sense too IMO. Hawaii clearly has some fairly large problems but they are making progress. If you're seeing too much wild optimism, I understand your concern but I'm not seeing much of that.
