In Set 1, CU was up 17-15, only to see UW outscore them 10-2, including the last 6.
In Set 2, CU trailed only 19-18, only to see UW outscore them 6-3.
In Set 3, CU was up 21-18, only to see UW outscore them 7-2, including the last 5.
This was a very tight match, except for the last 9 to 12 points.

The problem for Creighton tonight was they played a UW team that played it's absolute best match of the season. Yup. This is why I always say that losing in the tournament doesn't mean you are a bad team, because it only takes one team having their best match and you are out.

Washington's problem all season has been serve-receive and lack of consistency. Tonight their S/R was pretty good and their passing was the best of the season, IMO. During much of the season they would show spurts of great play, followed by long runs of something far less than great. Tonight, every time - every single time - that Creighton put together a string of points, UW had an answer and stepped up their game. That is a pattern I don't recall seeing once prior to tonight. Also, McPherson, looks like the in-charge motivator on the court. Something I think most fans would not have believed two years ago. It seemed like nothing was frustrating Creighton more than being in-system hitting some great shots only to have McPherson digging like a John Deere excavator.

Washington's problem all season has been serve-receive and lack of consistency. And up and down blocking...

Well, ding dang'it, Creighton couldn't get it done. Washington played like the more experienced team and Creighton played tight. I knew that Washington was at times a good blocking team, their hitting was better than I had expected. I thought Creighton would use last year's experience of hosting and be more in control of nerves, but they came out very tentative for the first time this year. Washington, on the other hand, was relaxed and playing to win.
Creighton volleyball won't seem the same with Kloth and Winters next year, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to watch them play for four years.
Congrats to Washington. They performed under pressure this evening and I think that they'll give Penn State a run for their money.

I had a dinner party with friends and had to leave at the end of the second set. But I watched the end on my phone while my friends indulged me. I'm glad I did.
Considering where the Huskies were in October (a five-game losing streak), this is especially satisfying. Huge kudos to Cook and Co. for righting the ship. The Huskies looked as well-prepared as they could be against one of the best-coached teams in the land.
All the Huskies came to play tonight but I'll single out a few:
-Sam Drechsel, who I have criticized for not fulfilling all of her potential, showed just how big of an offensive threat she can be tonight, and in the biggest game of the season. Sam was also huge in the blocking department. Way to go Sam!
-Lauren Sanders has become an integral part of the Husky offense over the last three or four matches -- the slide looked pretty darn good tonight. Sanders also had a great night blocking.
-What can you say about Shayne McPherson? After enduring a couple tough years (and being a target of a lot of harsh comments in this forum), Shayne is now a true leader and has made enormous strides in her play. Tonight, however, was just the capstone of a complete season of well-played games.
Looking forward to a date with Penn State.

Major rebuild for Creighton next season. Yes, the face of the program Jaali Winters graduates, along with Kloth, but the setter and libero are back for one more year, and the talented freshmen got some experience this season. They won’t be seeded again, but Creighton will have the potential to extend their NCAA bid streak to eight. How does Lexi feel about that? I wanted Lexi to transfer to Creighton.

Thank you Taryn Kloth for being a classy player for Creighton.

A little after the fact, but here's an article from this past weekend from the Omaha World Herald on the Creighton/UW match: STORY HERE(That's a great photo by Chris Machian. It's got the scoreboard, the thrill of victory on the other side and the agony of defeat of the players and the stares of disbelief in the stands. Great work.)
