I will be first to admit that this is second hand info......
My friend I have coached with before was at the scrimmage yesterday. He does not remember specific scores, but said it was very competitive throughout. Said NCSU and UNC each won 2 sets then they decided to play a 5th, and NCSU just edged UNC out.
However, he did say NCSU pretty much played their starting lineup while UNC played around with different schemes and utilized most players, even on the bench.
Harrison he said is going to be a big factor in UNC's comeback this year. She was phenomenal on both pins and defenses did not have an answer when she got a good set. She played both pins and did well in reception. Wine did well all around, thought her back row play looked good, but the terminating on offense was still in progress.
Setting looked decent with Atherton. Used more offensive options.
Fradenburg seems to have more of an edge and was more vocal and just more savy. Moseman was a sparkplug and had some big digs, but also was inconsistent. MG was very good defensively.
Clark, Esterly, and Tontai all got time and Clark was good offensively but slower closing the block. Esterly was good defensively and even looked a tad better offensively. Sagula even ran the middles as double quicks at one time with Esterly/Howard switching off and then Clark in the middle with Tontai at the OPP but hitting from the RS and Middle. However, Howard was very impressive and thinks she gets a starting spot easily. Behind her, it is a log jam.
And Cox did not play......was on the bench but he did not see any braces or wraps. SO I am guessing either had been sick or some kind of strain/concussion.
All in all, he said for their first spring match, it was a "good" showing, much better than times last year, but chemistry and consistency are a work in progress. Defense looks a little better, it is just getting the right offensive pairs figured out.

Harrison is a special player and very driven. My Daughter played with her in Club volleyball and I have witnessed some pretty incredible hills.

It was great someone streamed it! This was the first Spring game and it was the spitting image of our entire season. There is a lot to work on. The things I saw: CONS - Our serve receive is awful. There is not one person in serve receive that is consistent or above average. Unless the freshman come in and force Joe to play them (which based on his track record, he won't do anyway), most of our issues are not going to get fixed.
- Hunter Atherton, while talented, is incredibly inconsistent. Additionally, her style of setting 'not the obvious choice' causes such a problem with timing with everyone else. Annabelle Archer outperformed her in her two sets in terms of precision and consistency. Plus, Archer sets the middles WAY better than Atherton does.
- We should not be running a 5-1. I've said it on here plenty of times that I am a 6-2 enthusiast; however, that aside, our setters are not good enough in the front row to set a 5-1. Every game last season and in every set during the spring scrimmage, the other team goes on an INSANE run for the three rotations our setter is in the front row.
- We need to serve tougher... significantly tougher. Most of our serves are lollipops and, in addition to our blocking issues, it allows the other team to be in system way too often and easily side out.
- I feel like we suffer from a lack of volleyball IQ. Our blockers cannot read sets and cannot set up in time on 85% of the sets. We consistently give up tip shots in the X on obvious out of system plays. There needs to be a lot of situational teaching at practices.
- There still is a serious lack of leadership and communication on the court.
PROS - Lauren Harrison is solid! Someone else said it earlier on here, but when she got even an average set, she was terminal. She struggles on serve receive but all-in-all she did really well overall on offense. She will be a huge asset for us next season.
- Skyy Howard is a game changer. She should be the first middle in the rotation every set next season. And, it's not even close. She was the only middle that got even close to closing the blocks. She is also the only one of that crew that has the athleticism to block from pin-to-pin. And, again, when she gets a decent set, she's terminal.
As someone else said, NC State kept the same lineup throughout the entire thing and we played around. It really showed that there is a pretty large gap in talent/athleticism on our team. I wasn't expecting much to change from our last game to the first game of the Spring season, so we have a lot to work on! Can't wait to see how they grow!

I had been told we looked better in practice than we did in the scrimmage....but you have to be your best when you play other teams. I thought Harrison and Howard showed very good promise. They will be two big contributors we did not have last year. Harrison is rather new I believe to the 6 rotation player who also serve receives....she was mainly an offensive player and the defense is adding a new area to her game, at the college level that is.
I really think poor serve receive further pushes that Diaz will eventually get the libero jersey. I really like Mia, but there is no way your libero should get aced or pass so many free balls as she has been. Jacobs had the same issue. It will be a big help with Austin, Diaz, and Wurl added to serve receive in the fall.
I know there are a lot of 6-2 enthusiasts, but frankly, we do not have the hitters yet to have two strong RS players. Atherton can only do as much as serve receive allows her to do. I am still not sold on her leadership.
Also, we did not have Cox playing in the scrimmage....that was a big piece missing. She was working on her 6 rotation game and she is a chunk of the offense. I do wonder if she is injured, if she was sick, or if they were resting her some from last year.....
All in all, looks like the offense looks mush more promising, but the serve receive has to improve. There are key pieces coming over the summer that will aid in that. Will be interesting to see how the spring unfolds....just wish UNC would update its fans the way other spring teams do...

I hear you about not having enough pin hitters to really run a 6-2; but, if you don’t have the weapons to side out consistently when the setter is in the front row and a serious lack of height to block, isn’t it better to have height in the front row even if the second OPP isn’t going to be a terminal offensive player? It would also keep the block guessing between two options on not-so-great sets.
Ideally we have Harrison, Cox, and Austin, and then you’d have Peck, LaGarde, and Wine to fill that fourth spot.

BvVolley, while I am not commenting on the "con" aspect regarding serve receive problems as I am in no position to judge the current players, I can tell you that in the past Coach Sagula has played freshman as regular DS's in the back row serve receive. Although it was 10 years ago, he played both Brianna Eskola and Kaylie Gibson as freshman regularly as DS's in serve receive when they earned their spot to play. So don't necessarily write off the incoming Freshman as not playing regularly if they prove their worth in practice and/or the early matches. I think if Coach Sagula determines the Freshmen are better than the upperclass players, he will play them for the good of the team.

Atherton really should be taking leadership. She isn’t a terrible setter by any stretch but without the leadership piece of the pie I’m not terribly impressed with her skill set.
I didn’t see that serve receive was terrible in the clips I’ve watched but it was also from the NCSU side of the court and it was difficult to ascertain what was going on with Carolina defense.
We need a bigger block. Say why we want, Jacobs was a great defender and a very vocal back row leader.
