Well I hope this development you're seeing reverses a negative trend over the last 3 - 4 years. What I see is gradual year over year decline in offensive performance and at the same time an increase our opponents offensive performance. So not so surprising is the decline in year end record. I would be curious to see how this is getting addressed. I seem to remember some (relatively) pretty lean years for a while under McLaughlin between the Thompson (et al.) years and the Vansant (et al.) years. Yeah. A few 2nd round losses kind of put a damper on those seasons.

The earlier discussion got me to wondering how accurate a D/S ratio is to determining the quality of a libero.
So I took the top returning Pac liberos from a year ago (I was surprised that most all the Pac's liberos return for 2019) and calculated their % share of their teams digs/set. From these numbers (see below) you can see that though Hentz didn't have the highest D/S (Nuneviller had this distinction) she actually had the highest percentage of her teams digs, 36%. And though McPherson only had 4.06 d/s (7th) she was tied for 4th in having the highest % of her teams d/s.
In a synopsis, though a player doesn't have the highest number of d/s of a teams limited available digs, a player can be responsible for a higher % of them and carry the majority of a teams load. Though this ratio is better, in my book, it still doesn't reveal enough to determine whether a libero is better than another or not, just how much a team relies on them for receiving duties.
I guess one should assume that a teams blocking capability, opposition's serving avoidance, offense efficiency (and/or defense inefficiency) and other factors can play a significant role in a liberos value.
Also to consider when rating liberos is their assists per set ratio. Dirige led this category with 1.11 while McPherson was 2nd at 1.07. Percentage of a teams assist is a calculation for another night. SA/S was led by both Nuneviller and Arizona's Martin at .27 while McPherson was 3rd at .21
D/S % of teams D/S Stanford 13.51 Hentz 4.88 36%
USC 15.50 Garrick 4.83 31%
Oregon 16.33 Nuneviller 4.92 30%
Washington 13.92 McPherson 4.06 29%
OSU 15.78 Massey 4.63 29%
WSU 15.48 Dirige 4.36 28%
ASU 16.16 Leffel 4.48 27%
Utah 14.70 Doehrmann 3.87 26%
Others were all lower.

The earlier discussion got me to wondering how accurate a D/S ratio is to determining the quality of a libero. well, we could have saved you the trouble and told you that digs per set is not a very good metric for quality of libero. One- it depends on what gets counted as a dig (which isn't uniform), two- it depends on the offensive capability of your opponents, three- it depends on the offensive capability of your own hitters (if your own hitters are able to put the ball away, it disfavors longer rallies and this opportunities for digs), four- it depends on the defensive capabilities of your block (a touch off the block that is picked up by the backcourt is usually counted as a dig....that's a rather easy stat padder than the ball being stuff blocked, or hit into the net or long, thus resulting in a error)....all of these very important factors have NOTHING to do with the quality of the libero, but make large impacts on the digs per set. Take a look at last years digs per set leaders....how many of the top 25 are on NCAA at large (rpi 50ish) quality teams? almost none. Compare that to the other main stats (kills, assists, blocks, hitting percentage) and players on the top 50 rpi teams litter the top 25 in those categories.

Today I was thinking, "So when are they supposed to have this big reveal of new uniforms?"
Turns out, that's tomorrow.

Am I the only one who thinks the new uniforms look a lot like the old uniforms?

Kinda hope they fit better on real people than those mannequins. I'm guessing "Huskies" is for home and "Washington" is for the road.

My how times have changed when 6' players (Niece, Powell) now have to be in the front row for a team pic.
