She looked pretty damned good in the video I watched. It will be an interesting summer (or spring, if she's here early). The announcement said Airi would be joining the team in the fall.

Well, that's too late.

Two good transfers for Minnesota. Am I the only one waiting for the other shoe to drop? What's the other shoe?

This is all very interesting. There's a real chance that with these setter options, something will click, and with every impact player except SSS returning, the Gophs could actually do better in the tournament. That's hardly a bold prediction, and I don't think their overall record will be as good, but still.

Players transferring out, I'm sure he means. But we have no idea if that will happen.

But, hey, I'm an optimist. Everyone who doesn't know me knows that.

2019 Head Count:
3 Setters 7 Outside hitters (left and right) 6 Middleblockers 4 DS/Liberos 20 Total players.
4 Seniors 8 Juniors 5 Sophomores 3 Freshman 20 Total players.
For purposes of this count I included Kilkelly (DS/OH) as a DS and Rubright (MB/RS) as a MB. The numbers are not as high as I imagined. There will be quite a few Juniors though. Has anyone ever red shirted a Junior?

Has anyone ever red shirted a Junior? 2020 is way heavier than I thought. Wow. I haven't heard of any red shirted Juniors, but I'm guessing it can happen should something medical or super serious happened. How many redshirts are allowed a year, and what's the process behind that? My guess is Pittman redshirted because she was behind the Tapps; Morgan was red shirted due to injury. No one red shirted this past season, right?

From this past season. The audio drops for extended periods of time due to it being a live stream.

However, as a non-Gopher fan, I do think sometimes Gopher fans were a little bit blind to some of her weaknesses. It's certainly possible whoever replaces SSS may not be as good of an overall player but does some other things just a little bit better and combine that with player improvement, I could totally see Minnesota like winning it all next year.

It's not so much we (I) didn't see her weaknesses. It's that the number one thing you want from a setter is the ability to set a ball her hitters can put away. And she was absolutely fantastic at that.
I really do think people over-value blocking and digging (both important, mind you) and under-value the simple ability to dish.
(Plus she was a great server.)

That's a fair point, not just for SSS but for other fans of other teams. I think her blocking played second fiddle to her fantastic OOS navigation for instance, so some may overlook the weakness there. But I will say she never seemed to have an "off" night. She's by no means a Hancock type of setter -- she was more of a "pure" setter. But at this point, it's a matter of who steps up and brings out the best in an already well-established lineup. That could be in the form of a stronger block, or different setting format. Per this past season's stats, tempo was great, especially when OOS, which set SSS apart and (understandably) made other possible weaknesses seem less glaring. What I think could be interesting is a new push for tighter defense considering Minnesota got good at dealing with OOS plays due to SSS. Not sure if they can pull that kind of stuff again (if they can, that's certainly a formidable weapon). I do wonder if the block pulled through more, would that have either a) prevented OOS plays either by ending the rally or causing the opponent to play OOS, or b) made it easier for back row to read a hitter because the block was better placed.

Agreed, SSS can't be replaced. But, I still think that with all the experienced hitters and blockers returning, a very good, if not SSS-level, setter could take them on a serious tournament run to the FF and who knows, maybe beyond. I honestly think they can best this year's round of 16 result despite the drop off in setter quality (again, it's really not that bold of a contention). And, like I said before, I don't think, overall, their season will be as good. It will take time to get things together after the SSS era and there's no way the Gophs are going 19-1 in conference.

Gopher fans, you might remember in 2016, Kylie played at Minnesota in the elite 8, running a 6-2 with a senior setter, she was a freshman.
