northwoods - if an Illini fan, disappointed in your Bruna slight. Assuming that if she does play, you "won't" be a fan? She, along with about 150 others playing D1 ball played "professionally" elsewhere, and there were few if any college programs in their countries. If you wanted to play, you received a stipend ("pro" if you like). NCAA has already cleared that aspect for them which requires a small payback of the $s. If you are not a fan of the Illini, guess that's your choice. If it's the drug situation, the NCAA will either clear that for play or won't. I would hope that if this young lady becomes a team member, and all that support our club will welcome her. She is a college student here, obviously friends with many of our players, has practiced with them, and desperately wants to play ball with the Illini and get her college education. The tongue in cheek negatives do nothing positive. A slight against Bruna? Isn't that sort of backwards? Let's not trivialize dirty recruiting just because it might help our team. Bruna's pro career is in a different class from the "150 others playing D1 ball" you're trying to compare her to. There's no comparison. Bruna is a blatant amateurism violation. It's extreme. We've known it for months. She moved to Italy to play and profit as a full-time pro athlete. Ask her agent about it. That's different from an amateur getting vb expenses covered by her home club in her own country while she attends school or works a job. The question remains: Will the NCAA name a price that Bruna can pay to — poof! — become an amateur again? The FIVB steroids suspension runs til July. We'll see how that goes. Yes, because no NCAA athletes ever use performance-enhancing drugs and if they are caught they instantly lose all of their college eligibility

any of our esteemed Badger fans care to guess how your beloved JJ Watt grew into such a physical specimen only after he transferred to Madison? Guess it must just be the “home cooking” and not the steroids that the Chicago media constantly makes references to.

Judge and jury right - it must be tough on you to know everything about these situations. NCAA obviously utilizes your expertise, right? SO - Tamas is a "dirty recruiter"

Lot of people talking about Bruna without really knowing anything about her. This interview, posted on facebook, gives some level of insight into her professional career and why she wants to play NCAA volleyball. Of some note, she says she only played with Baruna A1 for half a year and did not get playing time. She then went to a lower level club, but does not say how much she played. She talks about compensation and NCAA eligibility. www.facebook.com/EliteVolleyScout/videos/1334225916723460/?q=Bruna%20Ana%20Vrankovic

Wow, Holzman must be the real deal to earn that honor. I guess her #36 ranking didn't do her justice? Would be huge if she can have a big impact immediately.

I don't think she'll beat out Prince or Cooney. While she's a fantastic player at the prep level, she needs some strength and conditioning... and her vertical isn't that impressive.

Isn't she a middle? If so, she won't be competing with Prince or Cooney. Per this article she had 749 career blocks. Can that be correct? playeroftheyear.gatorade.com/winner/ellie-holzman/36938

She started as a middle and was moved on the outside. Her coach wanted her to get more swings and moved to the outside her sophomore year. She will play the OH position at Illinois. She has a bright future at the college level - great get for Tamas.

I think she can beat Prince on Cooney. She is pretty impressive. Does not make too many errors and plays smart. Verticle needs work but she can kill another team with that swing

I cannot stop watching the videos and interviews with our high school Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, Ellie Holzman. What a gem of an athlete! More importantly, what a gem of of a person! Very poised, very well-spoken, accomplished in the classroom, and in her community. I am sure there were other state winners that would have been good choices for the national award. However, Gatorade should be applauded for ultimately choosing Ellie. Mt. Carmel Academy deserves credit for helping to shape this fine young American citizen. (It brings to my mind how different Mt. Carmel must be from Covington Catholic in Kentucky that has been in the news lately.) Ellie's parents have to be so proud of their daughter. What great parents they must be. Our country could certainly use many more Ellie Holzmans.
