Crazy way to start a season for CAL POLY WVB,...your "star" player at practice preparing for the first match in four days, but, waiting on a clear to play by the coaches & medical staff.
First things first,...will she be on the bus heading to the airport come Thursday?
I say if you are not feeling 100% by Wed. don't push it. And, it's probably time to start thinking about how many matches can you play before losing your RS opportunity.
Anyone who has experienced PCS,...probably have varing symptoms.
Torrey Van Winden's health is so, so important.
Hopefully, she has been feeling better than ever and we will see on Friday weaing the Green & Gold!!!

....CAL POLY returns 14 players from last year's team...including five starters.
Reigning Big West Player of the Year and AVCA All-American opposite hitter Torrey Van Winden returns for her senior season. Last year, Van Winden was second in the Big West and third in the nation in kills per set (5.07) and led the conference in hitting percentage (.365). Her 5.07 kills per set was the second-highest single-season average in program history. In addition, she also owns the third-spot in that category for her 2017 average of 4.83.
Junior Madilyn Mercer returns following an All-Big West First Team sophomore season. Mercer led the conference in blocks last season at 1.12 blocks per set. She had a match last season at Hawai'i that saw her total 11 block assists, just two shy of tying a program record. She was also fourth on the team in kills and 10th in the Big West in hitting percentage (.289).
Sophomores Avalon DeNecochea and Meredith Phillips come back looking to continue with the success they had in their rookie campaigns. DeNecochea was named Big West Co-Freshman of the Year (the first Mustang since 2015), All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team after filling the void at the setter position previously held by Taylor Nelson and directing the Cal Poly offense to the best hitting percentage in the Big West and seventh-highest in the nation at .295. DeNecochea was second in the conference in assists per set at 10.32 and was fourth on the team in both blocks and digs.
Phillips, a middle blocker, was named to the Big West All-Freshman Team and All-Conference Honorable Mention after finishing third on the team in kills and second in blocks. She also had the fifth-highest hitting percentage in the Big West at .325

Currently at 8PM (Thurs.) in Salt Lake City it is 88 degrees F,...and it may get hotter! For the meager crowd in attendance at the CAL POLY v. UK match this morning,...seeing Torrey Van Winden standing on the sideline in her warm ups while the team prepared for the match,...all became unofficially clear. Torrey will not play this season. Some of the parents of players I talked with indicated her doctors have not given her a clean bill of health. This is obviously a huge blow for Torrey, her teammates & CAL POLY VB.

Jake, TVW and Doctor did the right thing. They have other weapons to carry the team through. The main thing is for her to heal. She has a very bright future in volleyball if she wants it. No doubt she has the VB IQ and Skills to match.

It’s sad that this happened to her but her health comes first. I wish her speedy healing and full recovery and then come back with a bang. Her senior year will be very special if she decides to come back. Hopefully CP can make up for the talent lost and drives her teammates to work harder at the gym and have a successful season.

Now that the Utah Tourney is over we can look back on all three matches play by the "new look" CAL POLY Lady'stangs and say without much hesitation that with a healthy Torrey Van Winden on the court this would've been and 3-0 start.
CAL POLY playing in their third match of the season gave the utes,...probably the best team in the Tourney, all that they could handle,...falling 13-15 in set five.
And, if this match was played on a neutral court,...a very good chance CAL POLY would have been victorious.
All that being said,...coach Walters may have found a new offensive weapon in jr. OH 6'1 Maia Dvoracek. Maia had 20 Kills (tied for high) and 4 service aces (the high).

Although St. Mary’s is a competitive, probably top 50 team, it might hurt them more than the other two come conference time.

I wish TVW was healthy. It would have been a great season for the conference. It’s only first week, hope they can come back strong.

Hiw long is TVW expected to be out? Unknown. Concussions are weird. Maybe next week, maybe forever. You can think you’re ok for a bit and suddenly start having headaches again.

Not sure if coach Walters set her team to have Torrey playing in these initial matches or not. In any case, after playing their first three matches without Torrey,... CAL POLY has begun to shuffle the line around. This was most evident in the final match v. the utes. Coach Walters used nine players (no freshmen) for the entire match. Subbing one true freshman (K. Ham, DS) at the very end of the match.

I watched that Utah match. Even without TVW, they still played tough. I think they'll do OK in the BW. Teams may take CP lightly and they will surprise them. 2nd place is not out of the question.
