That is pretty good, you like him more than Chase Frishman? Troy's old partner? Yes, bigger player, more physical, much higher ceiling than Chase who is what he is, decent lower MD player. Chase is a much better player right now. With the exception of his offense - admittedly a big weakness - his skills are comparable to many of the top defenders. Beranek has won a single main draw match in his career, Chase has made a semi and has probably won 30-50 MD matches. Beranek may have a slightly higher ceiling but he is years away from reaching it and, if this switch was Troy's idea - doubtful - its idiotic to switch partners from a superior player who can share a ton of experience for an inferior rookie with limited potential, all because the new guy may be better two years from now. If Troy is still playing with any 6'0 player not named Taylor Crabb in two years, then he has wasted his potential.

From all indications, Chase dumped Troy for Piotr so kudos to Troy for making best move he was likely presented with. Should be playing with Rosie but Rosie's too conservative picking Mr. Journeyman Avery.

Troy could have taken more of Adam Roberts financial donations, smarter career move with Eric, give him credit for that too.

Trevor at that point had already kind of broke out considering he had 3 finals appearances with taylor before that

Main reason for the increased optimism for Eric vs Chase is sheer physicality. Beranek has a huge vert and very powerful arm. His defense is close to Chase level already with way better finishing potential in transition. I think they are very comparable players right now with more upside for Eric has he continues to move up the ladder partner wise.

Rosie is on this week’s episode of Sandcast by the way.
Update: USA Volleyball is making Tokyo 4* test event a mandatory event for the international events. It’s the same week as Hermosa Beach.

Could we see some tanking in the Country Quota?? I wonder if this forces some teams to add another big event to their schedules. Everyone who can get in will already be overseas for the run of majors and 4 stars so this CQ may need to be very early or onsite

I think only teams ranked in the top 50 can be "forced" to attend. I can't find the handbook page on this.
