So jonesing for just a little more vb to close-out my Wednesday evening, I look around for who is still playing and find my way to the Ole Miss v Georgia match and have to say, every time I see Ole Miss playing and check the stat board I am consistently amazed and confused to see the quality transfer from Portland - Izzy Guzik - sitting on the bench. Portland could have used her this season. They are struggling for a six rotation outside hitter.

I imagine BYU wants to pay back LMU for last season.
USD at Pepperdine will be good.

I imagine BYU wants to pay back LMU for last season. USD at Pepperdine will be good. Depends on what Pepp team shows up. They’ll need stellar passing to get all their hitters going and aggressive defense not letting balls hit the floor. We shall see. Their play at times can be too laid back.

They’ll need stellar passing to get all their hitters going and aggressive defense not letting balls hit the floor. We shall see. Their play at times can be too laid back. Pepp is a good passing team and USD one of the most conservative serving teams in conference. I think passing won't be what holds them back. I think they need Wylie to be big time tonight. Having a presence in the middle against USD's spread block system helps open things up for the others, whereas if Wylie can't get going, and they are just repeatedly throwing the ball out to Frohling/Ahrens/Scully it's going to be a tough night. Last match was a fun one, but admittedly both offenses weren't great at all. hitting below .200 for the match. I think both teams are strong enough on defense to get stops. I think it's going to come down to 2 hitters on both teams that need to carry the load, tbd of who that is but I imagine the gameplan is solid from both groups, who can outhit the scout report and terminate.

BYU steamrolled LMU in the second set, after a tight first set. LMU goes with a setter change to Pritchard in the third set. Megan Rice leads all hitters.
Pepperdine took the first set 25-19 over San Diego!
San Francisco and Pacific are neck and neck in the second set.
SMC pulling ahead in the second set, trying to even up the match with Santa Clara

Wow. Pepperdine came back to take the second set and lead 2-0 over San Diego.
BYU and LMU tied at 16 in the fourth. LMU trying to push for a 5th set.
Pacific up 23-21 in the third over USF. Very tight match overall.
Santa Clara came from behind to take the third set 26-24 and a 2-1 lead at Saint Mary's

LMU put up a valiant fight, but ultimately fell in 4 sets to BYU.
Pepperdine has been crushing USD...had a 2-0 lead and 22-17 lead in the third, but USD mounting an 11th hour surge to close to 20-22...
Pacific completed a 4 set win over San Francisco with a 25-16 fourth set.
Santa Clara competed a 4 set win over Saint Mary's with a 25-22 fourth set. Santa Clara out blocking SMC 17-8 seems to have been the difference.

Pepperdine sweep of San Diego, a week after San Diego knocked off BYU in Provo. well, well... I'm not surprised Pepperdine won this match. I thought San Diego would have a hard time matching the determination and fire they displayed in Provo. Added to that, Pepperdine was coming off a very disappointing loss at St. Mary's. I expected them to be fighting fiercely with everything they've got this week.
I'm not impressed by BYU right now and won't be surprised if they lose to Pepperdine. I honestly have no idea how they passed so well against Utah and Stanford. It feels like a different team altogether. Maybe this is the worst it can get and they'll start on an uphill trajectory again. I'm still hopeful, although the clock is ticking and they are running out of time.

How fun was that for Pepperdine fans! Ahrens was a force and Zelaya ran a great offence. USD was back on its heels for most of the match - like Zazu said, maybe mentally gassed after that BYU match.
On another note, was anyone else as irritated by that never ending football game on ESPNU that went into double overtime and ate up almost 2 sets of the match?!

Yea I think the combo of the bad trip up north for Pepp and USD getting the big BYU win for sure was a factor whether realized by the players or not. Pepp was hungry and upset after a bad loss to St. Mary's and even that terrible first set v UOP. USD probably was feeling pretty good sitting atop WCC. I don't think they overlooked Pepp because they know it's one of the few competitive matches in WCC but the Waves needed it more and played like it. I agree about BYU, how did they get some of those wins in non conference play? They are a good team no doubt, but very beatable and I also wouldn't be shocked if the Waves maintain the sense of urgency playing for tournament lives already in October and get another W. I think BYU wins but hope it's a battle. LMU v USD is going to be an interesting one too! USD gets shaken up and now has to play an LMU team that also desperately needs the win to have any shot of staying on the (or getting on) the bubble.
