LMU over Pacific 3-2. 15-12 in the 5th. What a gusty gutsy match by both teams.
SCU over Portland 3-2. 15-9 in the 5th. SCU hit .204 (55/24/152) | Portland hit .162 (55/29/160) SCU assists: 49 | Portland assists: 51
SCU blocks: 14.5 | Portland blocks: 6 SCU digs: 66 | Portland digs: 65 SCU aces: 6 | Portland aces: 7 SCU coaching 1, Portland coaching 0
SCU made adjustments after losing the first 2 sets. Portland never does... I guess it's easier to just blame the team. I think I might add this after watching these two teams recently:
SMU coaching 1, Pepperdine coaching 0

Pepperdine disappointing performance today hopes for an at large gone unless they can pull off an upset against USD and BYU... don’t see that happening. No adjustments made for poor passing. I was going to root for BYU now it’s USD :-)

Santa Clara took the fifth set 15-9 for the win over Portland. (I know they went 5 just to help out trojansc 's fantasy game...Shaffer had 8 kills, 25 assists, 3 aces, 9 digs, 3 blocks). Santa Clara had 14.5 blocks for the match to Portland's 6. Lots of battles today. I wonder what LMU's season would look like if they had everyone healthy. They are fighting/slogging through every match. Edit: I see Rose Booth is back, so that's good. Having a healthy Megan Rice is huge for this team. She's been playing great the past few matches. SF has an early 5th set lead over Gonzaga....both teams fighting to not be on the bottom of the conference. 6-2 in the fifth Rose Booth didn't play for LMU against Pacific and only played sparingly at SMC. Piper Manross has been filling in nicely and finding her freshman sea legs. DS Boehle is back with a wrapped wrist and Slattery's ankle is getting better. Megan has been playing very good with an effective attack out of the back row and seems to be recovered. Pacific are fighters, scrappy and some very good hitters. This coming week will define the WCC standings as both Pepperdine and LMU take on USD and BYU. If either Pepperdine or LMU have any hopes of making the tourney they need to at least split with these teams. LMU took BYU to 5 in Provo and Pepperdine did the same at USD. Though each has a matchup left with USD (LMU) and BYU (Pepperdine) at the end of the season this week is huge for all involved and could either clog up the top or make a clear separation.

@starbuck , what is up with Pritchard doing all of the setting for LMU and Tess Reid coming in only as a serving sub for the past few weeks? Injury to Reid that limits her ability to play? Sorry, I've been away. No, Reid hasn't been injured, just looking for a change and Pritchard was connecting. But as you can see Reid is back and Pritchard has been serving only. Coaches are trying to find best combos with all the injuries and making the puzzle work. Seem to be doing a pretty good job of it but too bad with all the these injuries but it seems that a lot of teams are having the same issues.

I was going to root for BYU now it’s USD :-) Very true, and unfortunate. No good wins out of conference and only 3 chances left in conference for a good win. Can they win any of those three? They haven’t shown me they can, Crazier things have happened but they are playing for their post season lives this week.

In order to do that they need to make some adjustments-move Shields to libero (moves better), Hames play back row for Frohling, move the pins around setting 80+ sets to the outsides isn’t going to change go with whomever is on each set. Throw something different out there use your players abilities don’t keep doing something that isn’t working ... there problem solved!

Much better passer.

SAN DIEGO—Anna Newsome was named the West Coast Conference's player of the week for week eight, as announced Monday by the conference. On Friday, Newsome led San Diego to a 3-2 victory over No. 9 BYU to remain unbeaten in the WCC. It was the first time the Cougars fell to a conference opponent at Smith Fieldhouse since 2017, also against the Toreros, 3-1. The senior setter directed USD's offense to a .288 mark against the Cougars, who have held their opponents to a .168 average this season. Newsome registered her sixth double-double of the year, collecting 49 assists and 13 digs, adding one ace. Newsome distributed the ball well, helping four Toreros to double-digit kills and added five of her own, hitting .556 with zero errors on nine swings. It is the first player of the week honor for Newsome and the second for the Toreros this season (Thana Fayad, Week Four). wccsports.com/index.aspx?path=wvball

I see Thursday's San Diego at Pepperdine match will be televised on ESPNU. This should be a great match.

The first time they met, Grace had by far her worst match of the season, hitting -.270 (8 kills 2 blocks). Hannah didn't have a great match either at .042 (10 kills 20 digs).

I hope this match can be competitive like the last one, wonder if Pepp can battle like that again? They need to capitalize on this week to give themselves a shot for postseason play. I think USD get's the W but hoping for Pepp so that the WCC may get a third team in.

So jonesing for just a little more vb to close-out my Wednesday evening, I look around for who is still playing and find my way to the Ole Miss v Georgia match and have to say, every time I see Ole Miss playing and check the stat board I am consistently amazed and confused to see the quality transfer from Portland - Izzy Guzik - sitting on the bench.
