Anyone watch the BYU / Portland match - wondering If there were any noticeable strategic moves during the match (that seemed to be lacking under Baxter)? Specifically were any DS used? With that low of a hitting percentage - was It due to poor setting because of poor first pass? And then totally unrelated - where do I find Info regarding schools scholarship funding? (Thanks In advance to my fellow WCC VT'rs!) I was there in person, but I had some distractions and wasn't watching as closely as I usually do. I haven't been watching Portland enough recently to know any differences in personnel decisions either. I did notice that the slide sets were pretty bad most of the match. Shayla Hoeft is so good at those that it was very glaring. She kept getting trap sets with nowhere else to go but into the block. When she finally got a good one, she put it away, but it was strange to see that connection not working very often. It's such a bread-and-butter play for them that I think it affected the rest of their offense. That was the most obvious issue, but I think the setting in general was a bit erratic, and I don't remember the passing being terrible. I thought it was just a bad night for the setter more than anything. They also tried a lot of tips that were too obvious and placed right at a defender. No adjustment really on those. BYU seemed really well prepared for them, but Portland could have done a much better job placing them. That's about all I can say about the hitting.
As far as blocking goes, Taylen Ballard-Nixon was simply hitting over Portland's setter down the line repeatedly in the first set and maybe the second. I'm not sure if Portland ever made a switch to try and match up differently. I just wasn't paying enough attention. They definitely made a nice adjustment on the back row though and were digging a lot more of her line shots in the 3rd set. I thought defensively on the back row they made some good adjustments in the 3rd set.

The most striking thing was BYU hitting over .400 with only 4 hitting errors in the match. Not sure what was happening on Portland’s side of the net. First match I've missed this season. Caught the very end of it streaming, but didn't make it in person.

Week 9: Friday, November 22, 2019
This is Pacific's final home match of the season, so normally they would be honoring the seniors. They don't appear to have any, so I guess that won't be happening tonight.

Pacific has no seniors and only one junior on the entire roster. I remember the announcer bringing this up in their match with BYU a few weeks ago.

It looks like Saint Mary's took their match over Pacific 3-1. Both teams were tied 5-11 in the conference standings, so now St. Mary's moves up with one match for each team left to play. (SMC at San Francisco, and Pacific at Santa Clara, both on Tuesday.)
SMC hit .247 and Pacific hit .145. Ashley, Pitts and Young were all in double digit kills for SMC (Pitts had 12 kills at .611). Patterson led Pacific with 12 kills, but hit 0. Bradford had 11 kills at .154.

Santa Clara has senior night (day) for a handful of players today, though they have a final home match Tuesday.
San Francisco also still has a final home match Tuesday, so not sure if they are doing a Senior Day today. Sometimes they don't like to have the ceremony right before Thanksgiving, because it interrupts family plans.
Are BYU and San Diego doing a senior celebration before today's matches?

USD sweeps Portland 11/18/11. Match was preceded by a nice Senior’s tribute. Jacobsen, Priest, Newsome and Douglass were honoured for their (ongoing) contributions. Three of these seniors are on the court for every match and show tremendous leadership. Katie Lukes was the player of the match with 15 kills on 20 attempts and no errors, hitting .750. Very nice touch: every player on the team was brought into the match in the third set to share in the win, which clinched the WCC championship title for the Toreros. USD has so much promise for the post season.
Santa Clara and LMU are tied one set apiece. First set was Broncos 25-18. Second set was neck in neck with LMU coming back to take it 26-24. Odom and Bartley leading with 8 kills apiece.
BYU finished off Gonzaga in 4 sets.

Set 3 went to Santa Clara 25-23. Broncos lead LMU 2-1. Strong serving by LMU, scrappy digging by SCU.
